Relax: your typical two cups of coffee per day do not worsen ED. In fact, moderate amounts of caffeine may be beneficial to erection health.

If you’re addicted to your morning cup of joe, the idea of giving up coffee in order to get and maintain erections might be a tough choice.

But do you really need to forgo caffeine if you have erectile dysfunction (ED)? Here are some facts.

What Causes ED?

According to a July 2016 article on Livestrong.com, although as many as 70% of men 70 or older experience erectile dysfunction, it’s not considered a normal part of aging.

For most men, the cause is physical, with the most common cause being poor blood flow to the penis.

Men with high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease are more likely to experience ED because the conditions have damaged the blood vessels, or reduced blood flow to the penis.

Is Caffeine a Contributing Factor to ED?

Although caffeine was suspected by many to cause erectile dysfunction due to its initial constriction of blood flow, the effect is temporary. In addition, it’s not as common in people who drink caffeine regularly.

In reality, caffeine is a vasodilator, improving blood flow, which is beneficial to ED. Granted, we’re talking about two to three cups of coffee a day. Any more than that and men can run into problems.

Too much caffeine can cause a rapid or too strong heartbeat, anxiety, headaches, palpitations, and, of course, problems falling and staying asleep.

Considering that lack of sleep can contribute to ED, it’s best not to have too much coffee, and not to drink it within several hours of bedtime.

Cutting Back on Coffee

If you’re drinking a substantial amount of coffee and want to cut back to see if it helps alleviate your erectile dysfunction, do your research.

Simply replacing a few cups a day with tea may not necessarily mean you’re cutting back on caffeine.

Stay always from black tea and opt for green tea, which has far less caffeine. Or just check the label to ensure the tea is “caffeine free” or “decaf.”
