Generic drugs are copied versions of brand-name prescription drugs. Once a drug maker’s patent expires, they can be legally made. The patent for drug companies gives that company the exclusive right to sell that drug until it expires. Since generic drug makers don’t have to do testing and experimentation to create the drugs, they can usually sell them for much, much less than the original drug company.
In the United States, Pfizer’s patent for Viagra runs to 2020. Therefore, there is no such thing as generic Viagra in the US. Other countries have different rights and the dates will be different.
Because you have to have a prescription to order Viagra, ordering it outside of the US and shipping or bringing it into this country is illegal. Even from Canada, whose Supreme Court disallowed Pfizer’s patent, isn’t allowed to import Viagra into this country.
In addition to the illegality of importing Viagra, much of the ‘generic Viagra’ you can get over the internet or in foreign countries doesn’t have the same quality control behind it. Much of it has none of the active ingredient in it, or it has amounts that are different than what you think you are getting.
Shabbily made ‘generic Viagra’ can also contain chemicals and minerals that are poisonous.
Many of the websites promoting ‘generic Viagra’ are also scams and buyers should certainly be cautious, if not skeptical, of any website that offers Viagra without a prescription. Web consultations with their doctors are not prescriptions.
So, in a nutshell, if you are in the United States and want Viagra, you have to get a prescription and either get it filled at your drug store or order it online from Pfizer. There are no other legal options.
