Behind the proliferation of print and TV commercials for impotence medications lies a very real health problem. Millions of men experience frustration and embarrassment because they find themselves unable to achieve and maintain an erection strong enough for intercourse.

While the problem is certainly more common among older men, it can also affect younger males as well. A study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that more than 18 million American men over the age of 20 are experiencing the symptoms of impotence.

18 Percent of Men Have ED

While the overall rate of erection dysfunction among American men of all ages hovers around 18 percent, the actual percentage of men affected climbs sharply with advancing age. Pinpointing the causes of impotence is difficult, but its incidence climbs sharply among men with certain health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Fortunately, medical science has developed a class of drugs that allows men to at least temporarily overcome their symptoms of impotence so that they can once again resume a relatively normal love life.

Introduction of Impotence Drugs

Viagra, introduced in 1998, was the first of the impotence drugs to hit the market. It has been followed by a handful of other impotence medications, all of which are similar in chemical makeup.

Standing out from the crowd of ED drugs available on today’s market is Staxyn, which comes in an orally disintegrating tablet that rapidly dissolves on the tongue, making it easy to take the pill discreetly and without liquid.

Staxyn Debuted in 2010

Introduced in 2010, Staxyn contains vardenafil, the same active ingredient that is in Levitra, which is manufactured and marketed by the same pharmaceutical team that makes and distributes Staxyn.

For men who find Staxyn’s ease of use appealing and would like to use the drug, a single dose of the medication costs $43, or $344 for four pills, from eDrugstore.com, which also offers rock-bottom prices on all of the other ED drugs approved for sale in the United States. Buy Staxyn in larger quantities, and its cost drops accordingly. One reason eDrugstore.com is so cost-effective is because the cost of your online physician consultation is included in the cost of the medication. This can save you money compared to the cost of your time and copayment when you make a traditional doctor’s office visit and wait for your prescription at your local pharmacy.

Apart from its ease of use, Staxyn acts much the same as most of the other ED drugs on the market. It should be taken roughly an hour before sexual activity. Its effects usually last four to six hours, but some users have reported that Staxyn was still effective for them eight hours after taking the pill.

PDE5 Inhibitors

Like the other impotence medications currently on the market, Staxyn is classified as a PDE5 inhibitor. These drugs temporarily block the effects of the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, allowing the muscle cells lining the blood vessels that supply the penis and other important organs to relax. The penis needs strong blood flow to achieve and maintain an erection.

Although some impotence has its roots in psychological factors, the vast majority of cases can be traced to health conditions that restrict blood flow to important organs either temporarily or on a continuing basis.

Heart health and erection health are closely linked.

Temporary Impotence

Temporary difficulties achieving erection may spring from a number of causes, including having had too much to drink. Although alcohol’s initial effects may seem somewhat stimulating, its overall effect is that of a depressant, and one of the many things it can depress is your penis, making it difficult, if not impossible, to get an erection.

Other temporary causes of impotence include tobacco use, certain medications, and fatigue. The nicotine in tobacco causes blood vessels to constrict, thus impeding blood flow to the penis and making it difficult to achieve an erection.

ED and Cardiovascular Health

MayoClinic.com points to the close relationship between erection difficulties and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Persistent difficulties in achieving an erection should serve as a warning that cardiovascular problems may lie ahead, because anything that’s restricting blood flow to the penis is undoubtedly reducing blood flow to other important organs.

Because the vessels supplying the penis are smaller than those that go to larger organs such as the heart and brain, recurrent problems of impotence will probably be noticed earlier, and if appropriate action is taken, a heart attack or stroke may be avoidable.

PDE5s Not for Everyone

While Staxyn and the other PDE5 inhibitors can help most impotent men to once again enjoy regular sexual activity, these drugs are not for everyone. Don’t take Staxyn if your doctor has told you that your health condition is too fragile to allow sexual activity.

You should also avoid taking Staxyn if you are currently taking any medications that contain nitrates. In combination, nitrate-based drugs and Staxyn — or any of the PDE5 inhibitors — can cause a dangerously sharp drop in blood pressure that in extreme cases could lead to death. Nitrate-based drugs are commonly prescribed for the treatment of angina, which can trigger pain in your chest, jaw, or down your arm. Recreational drugs, known as “poppers,” usually contain either amyl nitrate or butyl nitrate and are therefore not compatible with Staxyn and other PDE5 inhibitors.

Contains Phenylalanine

Staxyn also contains phenylalanine, an essential amino acid so-called because the body cannot synthesize it on its own and thus must acquire it through either dietary or supplementary means. While this substance is harmless to the vast majority of people, it can cause problems in those with a rare condition known as phenylketonuria. Those with the condition are born without the ability to properly process and break down phenylalanine within the body. Untreated, phenylketonuria can lead to seizures, intellectual difficulties, behavioral problems, skin rashes, and hyperactivity.

Almost all prescription — and many OTC — medications have some side effects, and Staxyn is no exception. According to Staxyn.com, the most widely reported side effect in controlled trials of the drug was headache, reported by 14.4 percent of those in the study group. Other common side effects include flushing, reported by 7.6 percent in trials; nasal congestion, 3.1 percent; indigestion/upset stomach, 2.8 percent; dizziness, 2.3 percent; and back pain, 2 percent. Most of these side effects are mild and disappear after a short period of use.

Serious Side Effects

Although serious side effects are rare with Staxyn, a sudden loss or decrease of hearing or vision has been reported by some individuals taking vardenafil and other PDE5 inhibitors. If you should experience either of these symptoms, you should immediately stop taking the drug and contact your family doctor or other healthcare professional.

Priapism — an erection that just won’t go away — may seem like the answer to a dream for some men, but in reality it’s a very serious disorder that can cause lasting damage to your penis. If you experience an erection that lasts for more than four hours after taking Staxyn, it’s important that you seek medical help immediately.

If Staxyn’s ease of use and price point appeal to you, visit eDrugstore.com where you can order the drug online and arrange to have it delivered discreetly to your home. If you have a prescription for the drug from your doctor, you can fax or scan and email it to eDrugstore along with your order. Alternatively, eDrugstore offers online consultations with licensed physicians who can prescribe the drug for you if appropriate. Best of all, eDrugstore’s prices are among the best you can find anywhere, and all of the drugs it sells are FDA approved and come from licensed U.S. pharmacies.
