Study shows young men are dealing with ED too.
Erectile dysfunction is more common in men over 40, but that doesn’t mean younger men are plagued with the problem too. In fact, research suggests that and increasing number of college-aged men are experiencing ED.

The research

A research project conducted by Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago found nearly 13% of college-aged men experience occasional loss of erections, or ED, symptoms, with the percentage increasing among those who drink liquor regularly.

This wasn’t the only surprise finding. Researchers also found out that younger men are more likely to talk with their doctor about the problem. While pharmaceutical companies have tried to remove the stigma, many older men have a hard time starting the conversation with their doctor. Apparently, that’s not a problem for 20-somethings.

Younger men are also turning to lifestyle medications like Viagra to treat their condition.

“As part of the study, a poll was administered which found that 6% of participants had taken Cialis, Levitra, or Viagra at some point to combat their instances of male impotence,” a press release said.

Battling the problem early

In addition to medication, doctors also suggest counseling for younger men. For many, stress may be an underlying cause. If that’s the case, counseling can help thwart the problem and keep it from being a problem in adulthood.

“The prescribed treatments of erection problems in young men are similar to the ones intended for older ED patients. The one critical difference is that an elevated importance is generally placed on counseling because erection problems that appear at a young age oftentimes lead to major psychological problems, no matter their underlying cause.”

The treatment options

Younger men have the same options as older men when it comes to treatment. Most men opt for an oral medication like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. There are other options if lifestyle medications don’t work, but most doctors select these a first-line of defense because they are effective and well tolerated by most men.
