Doctor in hot water over forged prescriptions
Dr. Mansoor Kassim, 37, was having “marital troubles” when he forged about $600 worth of the anti-impotence pill, Viagra.
According to Wales Online, the UK doctor came up with phony doctors and patient names to get the prescriptions filled.
Prosecutor Rob Simkins said: “The NHS counter-fraud team found theft, forging and fraud, which involves a considerable breach of trust by Kassim who was employed by the NHS as a senior doctor. He stole prescription forms from the trauma and orthopedic units. These were forged in the names of ghost patients who did not exist. The names of the doctors on the forms were equally fictitious.”
At some point, staff became suspicious when Kassim kept coming in to fill the script. Kassim is a trauma doctor, who wouldn’t be prescribing lifestyle medications like Viagra, so his frequent stops to the pharmacy become a red flag.
The doctor’s attorney, Lee Gledhill, says Kassim feels “ashamed and embarrassed.”
“Ordinarily he is a professional with high standards. It was a significant error of judgement in prescribing this anti-impotence drug,” he says. “He comes from a traditional Indian community and his background is really quite prudish. He feels a great deal of shame now this problems have been revealed publicly.”
Kassim had to pay for the investigation and received an eight-month prison sentence, which was suspended for a year. His medical license is being reviewed.
