If you’re looking for a little boost in the bedroom, herbal supplements might not be in your best interest, the FDA says.

FDA doesn’t regulate herbal supplements

Herbal supplements aren’t checked by the FDA, which means they don’t go through the same rigorous testing. In some cases, harmful ingredients are used to make these supplements.

The FDA does not have the authority to recall a food or dietary supplement, but it can issue warning letters to draw attention to illegal products.

The government organization drew attention to the issue back in 2011, when investigators found the active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil, in an herbal supplement, EntenZe.

That sparked an educational campaign to inform the public about the dangers of herbal supplements, some of which claim to treat ED as well as prescription medications like Viagra. Those claims, officials say, are false.

“There is a growing trend of products being marketed as dietary supplements or conventional foods with hidden drugs and chemicals,” said Ilisa Bernstein, deputy director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

“These types of products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building, and are often represented as being ‘all natural.’ Consumers should exercise caution before purchasing products promoted for these uses,” she tells Fox News.
