The brackets are filled out. The pizza is ordered. And people are already planning how they’ll spend their winnings from the bracket pool at work.

People everywhere are glued to the TV watching March Madness, so what does that have to do with having a vasectomy? According to some doctors, there is an uptick in the number of vasectomies that take place during the height of basketball mania. That way men can recover in front on the television with plenty of games to pick from to pass the time.

Doctor’s offices are full

“I’m doing them every 15 minutes tomorrow with no holes. It usually won’t be that full,” Dr. J. Stephen Jones, chairman of the department of regional urology at Cleveland Clinic, said in USA Today.

He said he noticed a couple years ago that vasectomies increased up to 50% during the NCAA basketball tournament.

This trend was first reported in 2008, when a clinic in Oregon publicized its “Snip City” March Madness event.

Men say it’s the best time for the procedure

“I wasn’t thrilled about having this procedure to begin with,” one man, who didn’t want to be identified, said. “But at least I get to recover in front of the television and watch as many games as I want without my wife complaining about it.”

The marketing scheme

Some people believe “Vasectomy Madness” is nothing more than a marketing tactic, but it seems some doctors are buying into it. According to USA Today, a urology practice in Richmond, Virgina, grabbed the URL vasectomymadness.com and is promoting the ability to “spend three days on the couch watching hoops.” Other urologists in Springfield, Oregon Austin, Texas, and Longview, Washington are among those are seizing the marketing opportunity and offering appointments for men that want to capitalize on the recovery time.
