FDA, STD, herpes, genital warts, fake medicine, fake STD cureBoth the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have started tracking down companies that are selling fake products over the counter as treatments, preventatives, and cures for sexually transmitted diseases.  These products claim to provide treatment for conditions such as genital warts, herpes, and even HIV which is the virus responsible for AIDS.

It’s not surprising that consumers fall into this trap.  In hard economic times many people have to give up their health insurance, and a visit to the doctor can be very expensive.  So they just hop online because they want to know if eDrugstore is legal?

The answer is yes because the only drugs that actually work for STDs are prescription drugs, which can’t be obtained without a doctor’s visit or a valid prescription.  The drugs themselves are also very expensive without medical insurance.

The seemingly obvious alternative would be to buy the readily available OTC version of the drug.  The fact that they are sold in a drug store would make a buyer think it’s a legitimate product, but sadly that’s not the case.

Some of the companies market their products as dietary supplements, but these products are considered drugs under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act because they claim to treat diseases.  As such, these companies can be legally prosecuted if they continue to sell these unregistered products.

Two federal agencies have stepped up in an effort to protect consumers for being duped by these false products.  Products such as Medavir, Herpaflor, Viruxo, C-Cure, and Never an Outbreak are being marketed as over-the counter STD cures.  Letters have been sent to the producers of these supposed “medicines” informing them that they are violating federal law.  In order for them to be legally sold they would first have to be evaluated for safety and effectiveness by the FDA.

Treatment, prevention, cure, STD, FDA “These products are dangerous because they are targeted to patients with serious conditions, where treatment options proven to be safe and effective are available,” the FDA’s Deborah M. Autor, JD, says in a news release. “Consumers who buy these products may not seek the medical attention they need and could spread infections to sexual partners.”

The Federal Trade Commission says it is also illegal to make unsubstantiated treatment claims.

These companies will have 15 days to notify the FDA that their violations have been corrected before legal action is taken.

For safe treatment of STD’s check out products such as Aldara, Acyclovir, and many others which are all FDA approved treatments.
