As FDA-approved generics continue to cut into the bottom lines of the world’s largest drug manufacturers, the pharmaceutical giants continue to look at ways to stay ahead.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Viagra manufacturer Pfizer is involved in serious talks with fellow pharma kingpin Wyeth. As a combined entity, these two companies would be a $75 billion giant, in terms of annual revenue.

As our friends at www.thestreet.com point out, Pfizer has grown to be the largest drug maker in the world, in large part because it consumed several rivals this decade, including Warner Lambert in 2000 and Pharmacia in 2003.

Before clicking on the following links, keep in mind that FDA-approved generics for Viagra do not exist because the patent does not expire until 2012. Same goes for Cialis and Levitra, whose patents expire several years later.

Having said that, go ahead and check out the Wall Street Journal’s take on the possible deal, and for more of the inside scoop, see this article.
