Can Viagra Lose Effectiveness Against Male Impotence?

The only reason Viagra might lose effectiveness against erectile dysfunction (ED) would be if the health factors behind the ED (such as worsening coronary disease) caused the problem to become more severe.

Viagra, Pfizer’s iconic little blue pill, revolutionized the treatment of male impotence caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis.

In recent years, broadcast and print media have carried numerous reports about the growing threat posed by the overuse of antibiotics and the resulting buildup of patient tolerance to these drugs. Medical professionals are now faced with a growing number of dangerous bacteria that are seemingly resistant to the current crop of antibiotics.

In the face of such phenomena, it’s probably only natural for men suffering from male impotence to wonder if their continued use of Viagra and other oral ED drugs will eventually render these medications less effective or even ineffective. Based on available research, it seems unlikely that a similar tolerance for these drugs will develop, thus rendering them ineffective.

Long-Term Outlook Good

In the early 2000s, a research team led by Michael Zelefsky of New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center tracked the efficacy of Viagra in men suffering from radiation-associated male impotence.

It found that 96 percent of the men who were initially responsive to the drug remained responsive to it four years after it was first prescribed. The patients who found Viagra was no longer effective against their male impotence turned out to be those treated with extremely high doses of external radiation.

In yet another study into the long-term effects of Viagra, it was determined that most of the men who no longer responded to the same dosage of the drug at which they started had experienced a worsening of the underlying medical conditions blamed for their male impotence.
