Erectile dysfunction can happen to men of all ages. Sometimes it’s due to physical reasons, such as prostate surgery, and sometimes it’s due to stress, depression or anxiety. Whatever the cause of your erectile dysfunction, there are things you can do to help avoid it or work through it. Here are some to consider.

  1. Drink coffee. Studies have shown that the right amount of caffeine may help with blood flow. According to a study from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, two to three cups daily is ideal to decrease your chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction.
  2. Exercise. Aerobic exercise helps keep your blood vessels healthy and helps you stay slim. Obesity can contribute to erectile dysfunction, and a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men who exercise had less erectile dysfunction than men who were sedentary. If you have a choice, skip cycling as it’s been linked to erectile dysfunction.
  3. Eat flavonoids. Think color: blueberries, raspberries, red wine, oranges—these contain flavonoids, which improve blood flow. A UK study found that men who ate three servings of these high-flavonoid foods weekly were 19% less likely to experience erectile dysfunction.
  4. Quit smoking. Smoking is one of the biggest causes of erectile dysfunction. It’s better to keep trying to quit, even if you fail, than to stop trying.
  5. Avoid alcohol. Although a glass of scotch might get you in the mood, alcohol can affect your erections.
  6. Brush and floss regularly. Keeping your mouth healthy is about much more than having nice breath for kissing. When plaque builds up in your mouth, it can cause inflammation in the rest of the body, damaging blood vessels. If you’re avoiding brushing and flossing regularly, you could also be increasing your risk for cardiovascular disease.
