No, it wasn’t terrorism. They were trying to illegally sell items that contained ingredients found in the erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs Viagra and Cialis.
The big scam
The scam involved the pair cold calling people in the United States to try to sell drugs that we’re approved for sale (without a prescription) in the U.S., including erectile dysfunction drugs.
In most cases, they’d get a wire transfer from the customer and then ship the drugs.
The drugs they shipped included:
- acetaminophen with codeine (a pain opiate)
- diclofenac (a pain medication)
- lorazepam (anxiety medication)
- human growth hormone
- sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) for erectile dysfunction
The men got caught after selling to an undercover police officer in Virginia.
Why erectile dysfunction drugs require a prescription
Getting a call offering you erectile dysfunction drugs should be a big red flag. There’s a reason that the major ED drugs—Viagra, Cialis and Levitra—require a prescription. The FDA wants to ensure that the erectile dysfunction drugs you’re consuming are safe and effective.
If you buy ED drugs from someone over the phone, you have no idea what you’re getting. The best-case scenario is that you’re throwing your money away on pills that don’t work. They could simply be sugar shaped like a pill.
The worst-case scenario is that you’re purchasing pills with ingredients that can make you sick or even kill you. That could be from toxic chemicals in the drugs, too much of a particular substance (such as sildenafil or tadalafil) or undeclared ingredients that interact with medications you’re already taking.
Contraindications can be deadly and it’s not worth risking your life when there’s a safe and legal alternative to get erectile dysfunction drugs. Just talk to your doctor!
