The benefits of flavored condoms
The spicy pickle-flavored condoms were created by Indian condom brand Manforce, which many be onto something seeing that flavored condoms make up half of all condom sales in the country. Joy Chatterjee, the brand manager at Mankind Pharma, which makes Manforce condoms, says part of the allure of flavored condoms is that they help disguise the smell of latex.
The spicy condom, and other flavors, are also taking some of the stigma out of buying condoms, as people in India can’t just grab a rubber off the shelf. They’ve got to ask a pharmacist for one. But Chatterjee says that now customers are starting to feel more comfortable because they can simply request a flavor—without necessarily having to say the word “condom.”
It’s too early to say whether it’s a coincidence that oral sex is on the rise in India or whether it correlates with the popularity of flavored condoms. But either way, it’s helping to prevent the spread of STDs.
Why don’t more men use condoms?
Unfortunately, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, only about one-third of men used a condom the last time they had sex. Why aren’t more men using condoms?
Part of the problem is that marketing has led too many people to believe that condoms are really just about preventing pregnancy. And with more women having access to reversible contraception—such as the birth control pill, IUDs and arm implants—condoms may appear unnecessary.
There’s also the worry that sex won’t feel good—especially for men—with a condom. But the truth is that for most men, sex is just as satisfying with condoms.
If the anxiety or dread of putting on a condom is enough to give you erectile dysfunction (ED), ask your doctor for a prescription for an ED drug like Cialis. Don’t let ED keep you from having great sex.
