Cool Date Ideas: New York City

New York’s options for a date are nearly endless: bars, restaurants, and music cover the sprawl of the town from end to end.

When I went looking for cool date ideas in New York, I thought about what I would want. Something a bit different, something off the beaten path, is really what I would seek out if given the chance to take a trip to New York.

Spots with a more-memorable-than-usual air to them can be hard to find, and sometimes a pointer in the right direction can help. I’ve hand-selected a few places of extraordinary and unusual activity, places that are gems of new experiences in an already-exciting city.

The Cloisters at the Met
The Cloisters are set in a park overlooking the Hudson river, and they surround a beautiful garden.

The entire structure is built out of material from medieval French cloisters, and it looks like it survives beautifully from the Middle Ages. It was actually built 100 years ago, though. Inside is the Metropolitan Museum’s collection of medieval architectural, horticultural, and historical information.

If you’re not interested in the history, the feel of the medieval castle and beautiful gardens inside can still lend a romantic feel to any afternoon or evening date. Few women are ever treated to a walk through a castle toward an immaculately-kept garden. If you go to The Cloisters after a glass of wine, you’ll have a perfect evening.

And if you’re out with the intellectual type, you’ll have topics to converse about for hours on end. The inner garden is kept lined with benches covered with vining plants and flowers, and the entire area overlooks the Hudson river, as you can see from the featured photo of the gardens. Other areas are planted with medieval medicinals, some of which were considered to have magical properties — yet another topic for conversation with a curious date.

The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe

The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe does more than sell coffee and books, though they provide a great place for sitting and reading.

They stock a range of literary nonfiction, fiction, rare books, and collectibles — so it’s the perfect place to find a gift for loved ones or uncover your next read. You can also buy a glass of beer or wine, eat a salad or sandwich, and sit and talk with your date.

The exceptional trait of this “downtown institution and tourist destination,” which the New York Times says is “the literary salon the city has been missing,” is that it is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, and all of the profits go to Housing Works, an organization that provides support services for homeless people living with HIV/AIDS.

Many of these people would die because of their poverty, going completely without treatment. But with the help of Housing Works, their lives can improve and the spread of HIV and be lowered.

First dates can be great at a bookstore, partly because there’s no looking like a loser if you show up a few minutes early or if one of you arrives a few minutes late: just grab a book, sip your coffee, read, and wait. You’ll look cool while you’re doing it, I promise.

Another plus is that when your date arrives, you’re guaranteed to have something to talk about. There are literally shelves and shelves of potential ways to connect and find common ground with your date.

And if you’re there with someone familiar to you, someone who’s a part of your life now, you can explore your interests while interacting with each other. If you both want to sip and read for an hour or two, go ahead. It’s a great way to let conversation arise naturally; before you know it you’ll be discovering things you never knew about your partner.

Until Next Week!
I’m happy that I was able to bring you some great date ideas in New York, whether you live there or are just visiting.

After all, when I go to New York for a trip, I want to be able to say more than “We saw the city.” I want to be able to say “We saw something special.” You should be able to say the same.
