Trauma to the pelvis (shown above), perineum, or male genitals can damage the delicate network of nerves and blood vessels that are essential to healthy erectile function.

Most people today recognize that the single biggest cause of erection problems is insufficient blood flow to the penis.

Another 10 to 20 percent of erection problems is attributed to psychological factors, such as depression and anxiety.

Often overlooked altogether, probably because its numbers are relatively low, is a traumatic injury that makes it impossible for a man to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse.

A study conducted by researchers at St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds, England, found that pelvic fractures lead to male sexual dysfunction in as many as 30 percent of all such injury cases.

Researchers attributed the high rate of sexual dysfunction to the close relationship of the bony pelvic ring and the soft tissues that surround it.

Surgery Can Cause Added Damage

Ironically, surgical repair of the pelvic fracture can further exacerbate problems of sexual function because of the damage it may cause to adjacent structures.

A small-scale Chinese study, published in the “Chinese Journal of Traumatology,” reached conclusions similar to those of the English study about the link between pelvic trauma and male sexual dysfunction.

Traumatic injury to the perineum — the area being the anus and the scrotum in men — can also lead to erection problems, according to an article posted at Prostate.net. Housed beneath the skin of the perineum is the pudendal canal, also known as Alcock’s canal, through which pass the nerves and arteries supplying the penis.

Traumatic injury to the perineum often results in damage to these delicate nerves and blood vessels, which in turn can lead to erection problems.

If you have suffered pelvic or perineal trauma or other blunt force trauma to the groin and adjacent areas, consult your doctor immediately so that the damage can be assessed and a treatment plan developed.
