If you contract the herpes virus, you will have periodic outbreaks of sores in your genital area. Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that prevents the virus from spreading throughout your body by stopping viral replication. Acyclovir doesnt eliminate the herpes virus from your body, but it will decrease symptoms frequency, severity, and duration. You still can infect others with the herpes virus via sexual contact.
Acyclovir comes in tablet, capsule, and liquid form. You take the medication orally, so it is much more convenient than creams, which can be messy and cause burning, itching, and dryness at the application site.
You take Acyclovir 2 to 5 times per day. To treat genital herpes, you might need to take Acyclovir for up to 12 months after the onset of symptoms. It would be best if you took Acyclovir exactly as directed by your doctor. Your symptoms should improve if you follow your doctors instructions. If you miss too many treatments or stop taking your medication early, it can cause an outbreak that is harder to treat.
Typical side effects of Acyclovir include nausea, vomiting, headache, and digestive upset. Acyclovir can cause more serious side effects in some patients. Notify your doctor if you are experiencing unusual side effects while taking Acyclovir.

These herpes family viruses reside in nerve cells and alternate between active phases, manifested by cold sores, genital herpes lesions, or shingles, and dormant phases when no symptoms are present. By making it more difficult for these viruses to multiply, Acyclovir can significantly reduce their active phases.

The Herpes kit tests for genital herpes, or HSV-2, which is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the United States. You can contract this infection through oral, anal, or vaginal sex. Often there are no visible signs or symptoms to alert you of this infection’s presence. In addition to regular screenings, it’s in your best interest to get tested if you believe you have been exposed to herpes or if you have had unprotected sex.
Genital Herpes is the 2nd most common STD.

Shingles, which occur most often in adults 50 or over, are caused by herpes zoster, which is the name attached to an adult-onset reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox in childhood. No virus in the herpes family has a cure, which means that once you contract one of these viruses, it will remain in your body for life. The viruses alternate between active and dormant phases and reside in nerve cells during the latter.

USES: Acyclovir is used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses. It treats cold sores around the mouth (caused by herpes simplex), shingles (caused by herpes zoster), and chickenpox. This medication is also used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes. In people with frequent outbreaks, acyclovir is used to help reduce the number of future episodes. Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. However, it is not a cure for these infections. The viruses that cause these infections continue to live in the body even between outbreaks. Acyclovir decreases the severity and length of these outbreaks. It helps the sores heal faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching. This medication may also help reduce how long pain remains after the sores heal. In addition, in people with a weakened immune system, acyclovir can decrease the risk of the virus spreading to other parts of the body and causing serious infections.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 2 to 5 times a day. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise. If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. This medication works best when started at the first sign of an outbreak, as directed by your doctor. It may not work as well if you delay treatment. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, dosage is also based on weight. This medication works best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished. Do not change your dose, skip any doses, or stop this medication early without your doctor's approval. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
