First marketed in the United States in October 2015, Addyi has thus far failed to live up to the full potential that its developers and supporters believed it could have. However, a recent review of earlier clinical studies indicates that the drug could significantly increase sexual desire and arousal<\/strong> in premenopausal women, particularly if the drug were combined with psychological counseling.<\/em><\/p>\n

Michael Krychman, M.D., executive director of the Southern California Center for Sexual Health and Survivorship, led the post-hoc review of earlier studies into the effects of flibanserin, the active ingredient in Addyi. In presenting the results of the review<\/a> at the May 2017 annual meeting of the American Urological Association, he stressed that medical treatment addresses only one aspect of sexual dysfunction among women.<\/p>\n

“Sexual health and wellness<\/a> is a multifactorial issue, so it’s not uncommon for women to have more than one sexual problem or sexual complaint,” said Dr. Krychman. Addyi\u2019s less than spectacular performance over the past couple of years can probably be ascribed in part to a number of factors that have nothing to do with the drug\u2019s efficacy. In giving its final stamp of approval to the drug on August 18, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration attached a number of conditions to its marketing that most observers feel have cast a pall over its market outlook.<\/p>\n

Side Effects Worried FDA<\/h3>\n

The drug regulatory agency was extremely concerned about the drug\u2019s possible side effects, such as severe hypotension and possible loss of consciousness. Additionally, the risk of these side effects was sharply increased if the drug were used with alcohol, so the FDA took extreme steps to warn Addyi users of these dangers.<\/p>\n

The regulatory agency approved Addyi under its risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS), which requires that physicians prescribing the drug and pharmacists dispensing it first be certified under the REMS program. This requires a short online course that educates doctors and druggists about the drug\u2019s serious side effects and gives them the information they need to pass along to patients or customers using the drug.<\/p>\n

These conditions undoubtedly scared off some potential users of the drug, as did the hesitancy of most health insurers to reimburse insureds for the cost of the drug, estimated to run about $800 a month. To be effective, the drug must be taken daily. In this respect, it is unlike most of the men\u2019s drugs for erectile dysfunction<\/a>, which are taken only as needed.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Not Really \u2018Female Viagra\u2019<\/h3>\n

Although Addyi has sometimes been called \u201cfemale Viagra<\/a>\u201d or \u201cpink Viagra,\u201d these nicknames are misleading, because Addyi has little in common with Viagra or other ED medications. The male drugs temporarily optimize blood flow to the penis, making it easier for men with compromised vascular systems to achieve erection.<\/p>\n

Flibanserin, Addyi\u2019s active ingredient, bears more resemblance to an antidepressant than to any of the male ED drugs. It subtly rebalances brain chemistry in such a way as to increase female sexual desire. The medication tends to lower levels of serotonin, which is believed to inhibit sexual desire, while increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, which are thought to boost sexual desire.<\/p>\n

2,300 Women Took Part in Studies<\/h3>\n

As part of their review, said Dr. Krychman, the research team collected and analyzed data on more than 2,300 women who had participated in three 24-week clinical trials pitting Addyi against a placebo. All study participants were premenopausal women who had been diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD.<\/p>\n

The results of the studies were based on the women\u2019s self-graded marks on the Female Sexual Function Index, which covers sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Women who had received daily doses of 100 milligrams of flibanserin reported statistically significant improvement on all parameters of the FSFI over those who received placebo.<\/p>\n

Women Need to Know All Their Options<\/h3>\n
