\nThe study says, \u201cHealthy, middle-aged smokers who take the most popular smoking cessation drug on the market have a 72 percent increased risk of being hospitalized with a heart attack or other serious heart problems compared to those taking a placebo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to quit smoking to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease but in this case they\u2019re taking a drug that increases the risk for the very problems they\u2019re trying to avoid,\u201d says Sonal Singh, M.D., M.P.H<\/a>., an assistant professor of general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the lead author of the research.<\/p>\n
