Introduced in 1998, Viagra was the first in a series of new oral medications designed to treat erectile dysfunction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Cialis and Viagra are the top selling oral erectile dysfunction drugs in the United States. On the market for 13 and 18 years, respectively, the two medications have stood the test of time, and each has millions of loyal customers who keep coming back for more. All of which prompts the question: How do these two very popular impotence drugs differ from one another?<\/p>\n

Complicating any attempt to compare the two drugs is the fact that Cialis is available in two different formulations — one of which is comparable with Viagra and another that differs from all other impotence drugs currently available.<\/p>\n

Viagra Was First of Its Kind<\/b><\/p>\n

Viagra was the first of the ED drugs to hit the market, going on sale in 1998. In many ways, it revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction, focusing on improving blood flow to at least temporarily allow patients to regain erectile function. In the years preceding the introduction of Viagra, it was widely believed that most cases of erectile dysfunction were psychological in origin. Viagra and the science behind it revealed that, in fact, about 80 percent of all ED was caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis. And Viagra — and the drugs that followed — offered an effective to way to overcome that problem, at least temporarily.<\/p>\n

Viagra’s distinctive blue, diamond-shaped pill should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity to optimize blood flow to the penis so that an erection can be achieved and maintained. Its effects last four to six hours. Because it is designed to be taken in advance of sexual activity, it is sometimes referred to as an as-needed or on-demand drug.<\/p>\n

Cialis Approved in 2003<\/b><\/p>\n

The first formulation of Cialis to come to market was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in late 2003 and was, like Viagra, a medication to be used as needed or on demand. However, its duration of action — up to 36 hours — was far longer than Viagra’s. This has earned Cialis the nickname of the weekend drug, suggesting that a dose taken late Friday night could still be working until late Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Available primarily in tablets of 10 and 20 milligrams, Cialis for use as needed should be taken up to an hour before sexual activity, although many men get the results they need in less than 30 minutes. Viagra is available in tablets of 25, 50, and 100 milligrams, although the 50-milligram tablet is the recommended starting dose. As previously noted, the drug takes effect within an hour, and its effects last up to four or five hours.<\/p>\n

No Viagra for Daily Use<\/b><\/p>\n

These is no Viagra equivalent of Cialis for daily use. The latter drug, available in tablets of 2.5 and 5 milligrams, must be taken daily to produce the advertised results, which is the ability to get an erection strong and long-lasting enough whenever the need might arise. While none of these drugs cures erectile dysfunction, Cialis for daily use does the next best thing by making it possible to have sex whenever you’d like without having to pop a pill and wait up to an hour to get an erection.<\/p>\n

Both these chemical compounds belong to a family of medications known as PDE5 inhibitors, which get their name from the unique ability to disable an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-5. In men with blood flow problems, the primary cause of erectile dysfunction, the PDE5 enzyme can make it difficult, if not impossible, to get an erection.<\/p>\n

This pesky enzyme breaks down a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate or cGMP that relaxes the smooth muscles lining the arteries supplying the penis, thus sharply increasing blood flow. In men with vascular difficulties, the PDE5 enzyme can break down cGMP faster than it can be replaced, thus sabotaging the erection process.<\/p>\n

Side Effects Generally Mild<\/b><\/p>\n

The side effects from both Viagra and Cialis are similar, largely because their chemical compounds are very similar. Among the more common side effects are back and muscle pain, dizziness, flushing, headache, nasal congestion, and upset stomach. These adverse effects are usually mild and often disappear altogether upon continued use. Both drugs are associated with a couple of more serious side effects, including sudden decrease or loss of hearing or vision and an erection that lasts for four hours or more.
