\"\"<\/a>Many men over the age of 50 deal with an enlarged prostate.\u00a0 The condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, comes with symptoms that make it difficult for men to urinate.\u00a0 If the condition is left untreated it can lead to bladder, urinary track or kidney problems.\u00a0 However, a recent study shows coupling a cholesterol medication and Propecia<\/a>, a medication to help treat BPH, may lead to even better results than using just Propecia alone.<\/p>\n

The study<\/strong>
\nResearchers at Children\u2019s Hospital Boston published their findings in Journal of Urology.<\/p>\n

“We don’t know the mechanism, but the results suggest to us that lowering cholesterol has the potential to reduce BPH in men,” says senior author Keith Solomon, PhD, a biochemist, and member of the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Urology at Children’s.<\/p>\n

“This brings up the possibility that other cholesterol lowering therapies, including exercise and diet, may prevent BPH from developing.”\u00a0 However, researchers believe these kinds of studies are just the beginning of a new kind of treatment for those suffering with BPH.<\/p>\n

“There is a lot more we want to do in the lab, with regards to studying BPH and the use of cholesterol-based therapies to control disease progression,” says Solomon.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The future<\/strong>
\nThe current findings came from tests done on hamsters.\u00a0 In the future researchers would like to test out a few more theories and then move on to clinical trials.<\/p>\n

“The Syrian hamster model that we are now using seems particularly good for examining the role of cholesterol in prostate disease, and the testing of novel drug therapies to help alleviate symptoms. We should be able to make substantial progress in developing new treatments and in understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning the disease using these hamsters.”<\/p>\n
