Erection problems are slowly but surely making their way out of the closet and into the regular dialogue between men who suffer from the effects and their health care providers who can help. And that\u2019s a good thing. <\/span><\/p>\n

This also means doctors might ask about erection problems, even if an appointment is about something else. One example? Back pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back pain brings many men, as well as women, to their health care provider\u2019s office every year. What you might not know is that there\u2019s a connection between back pain and erection difficulties. But with your doctor\u2019s help, you could overcome it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Erection Problems Can Happen at Any Age<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Time was, erection health was viewed as the usual domain of young men. And as men aged, problems achieving and maintaining erections became expected. But the realities are a bit different, and they challenge both ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For one, young men are not immune to erection difficulties. They can emerge at any age, and for a number of reasons. But more importantly, health care professionals and researchers alike do not consider these problems normal at any age. That\u2019s one of the biggest surprises for a lot of men — age does not equal a decline in sexual health, at least not age alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Men of any age can experience back pain, particularly lower back pain. But research behind it still has a way to go. Christina Lasich, MD, writes for Health Central, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The link between spine disease and sexual potency has long been a subject of speculation, but the mechanisms remain unclear and research enthusiasm is lacking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The logic is clear, though. Erections are the result of a complicated system, part of which includes nerve endings that are located in the lower part of the spine. These nerves serve a special purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the signal for an erection travels from the brain down the spine, the nerves that supply the penis trigger the release of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is important because it is responsible for promoting the influx of blood that\u2019s necessary for an erection to happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Dr. Lasich explains, injuries to any part of the spine can cause erection problems. Two different nerve centers help control erections, so injury to or pain in nearly any part of the spine could result in erection difficulties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Repairing Spinal Injuries Might, or Might Not, Help<\/strong><\/p>\n

It stands to reason that if there is an injury to the back, repairing that injury or allowing it to heal would help resolve erection problems. And for some men, that’s exactly what happens.<\/p>\n

For example, Advanced Physical Medicine<\/a> explains that pinched nerves can decrease the amount of blood that would normally flow to the penis to create an erection. When those pinched nerves are successfully treated, normal blood flow may be restored and erections could return to normal.<\/p>\n

Taking prescription pain killers for back pain isn’t the same as treating the problem, even if the medication eases the symptoms. WebMD<\/a> says a certain class of pain medication called opioids can exacerbate or even cause problems achieving and maintaining an erection.<\/p>\n

Although there is no definitive scientific proof of the link between opioids and erection problems, there is enough evidence to strongly suggest a connection, and to make both doctors and patients wary of taking them long term.<\/p>\n

That leads us back to real treatment of back pain and back injury, and whether that will help erections return to normal.<\/p>\n

In a case reported and published at the U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/a>, a patient experienced\u00a0erection problems\u00a0for 17 years after suffering a herniated disk. Fifteen days after undergoing surgery to repair the herniated disk, the patient recovered normal erections. Ten years after the surgery, erections were still normal.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, repairing the damage isn’t a guarantee. Dr. Lasich says most experts in the field believe the best results are seen in patients with the mildest forms of back injury. Some men may have surgery to repair a herniated disk or another back injury, and not see significant improvement.<\/p>\n

Erection Medications Could Help, Even if Surgery Fails<\/strong><\/p>\n

Surgical treatments to repair the cause of back pain, and consequently restore normal erections, don’t always have the hoped-for effect. So what then? Medications such as Cialis, Levitra, Viagra, and other PDE5 inhibitors might help.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lasich explains that where libido or desire is not the problem, but back pain or injury is, these medications help improve blood flow to the penis, which can help erections happen more like normal.<\/p>\n

Desire is necessary for PDE5 inhibitors to work, because they don’t make an erection happen. They help improve the flow of blood that gets interrupted after arousal has begun.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, medications such as Viagra may also work for some women with sexual issues caused by back pain. The U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0 published a case study in 2007 that showed a female intervertebral disk rupture patient was given Viagra, and she saw\u00a0normal sexual function return. This is believed to be true because women also have erectile tissue.<\/p>\n

Erection problems can be difficult to narrow down because there are so many potential causes. But back pain is almost impossible for most people to ignore. If you have back pain and also experience erection difficulties, there might be a connection between the two.<\/p>\n

The best first step to take is talking with your doctor. He can help identify the source of your back pain, and also help determine whether it is the cause of erection problems.<\/p>\n

Repairing the damage to your back, or allowing it to heal, could be all that’s necessary to restore normal erection function. If not, you could find relief in one of the PDE5 inhibitor medications that may men rely on every day.<\/p>\n
