How it works:<\/strong>
\nWhen someone has a brain tumor, the treatment suggested is often chemotherapy.\u00a0 The\u00a0loss of erection treatment kills cancerous and non cancerous cells in the body.<\/p>\n

Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center know that Viagra, and other drugs like it, open the blood vessels and allow more blood flow which is why it helps men get an erection, more blood can flow to the penis.\u00a0 When that same pill is given to someone undergoing chemotherapy their blood flow is increased as well, which allows more of the chemotherapy to attack the tumor.<\/p>\n

Only lab tested:<\/strong>
\nSo far this new idea has only been tested on rats.\u00a0 The \u201csubjects\u201d were given an ED medication along with adriamycin, a drug known to fight tumors but has a hard time getting to the tumor once the medication is in a person\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cWe chose adriamycin for this study because it is one of the most effective drugs against brain tumor cell lines in the laboratory but it has very little effect in animals and humans because it is unable to cross the blood-brain tumor barrier. The combination of an erection issue medication and adriamycin resulted in longer survival and smaller tumor size,” said neurosurgeon Keith L. Black, M.D., chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute.<\/p>\n

The next step:<\/strong>
\nNow researchers will take the trial one step further.\u00a0 They would like to get approval to try this on real patients.\u00a0 Researchers say the dose of loss of erection medication given to the rats was comparable to what would be given to humans and none of the rats had an side effects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
