Viagra’s release in 1998 answered the prayers of many men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Since then, two additional ED drugs have been released – Cialis in 2003, and Levitra, also released in 2003. But while men who take these drugs to help with their sexual dysfunction have been celebrating for more than 10 years, women have been waiting for a Viagra of their own<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Viagra for women?<\/p>\n

As it is with men, sexual dysfunction is extremely common in women. More than 43% of American women experience some form of sexual dysfunction. The most common sexual problem in women is hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), which is low sex drive and difficulty achieving orgasm. While female sexual dysfunction is frequently caused by psychological issues, physical problems can also be the culprit.<\/p>\n

New studies suggest that some cases of female sexual dysfunction might be related to inadequate genital blood supply. This is also a cause of sexual dysfunction in males, and is what Viagra and other ED pills are designed to treat. Tests have been conducted using rats, and have shown that Viagra is successful in increasing blood flow to the vagina and clitoris.<\/p>\n

Other studies show Viagra to have a beneficial effect on women who suffer from sexual dysfunction as a result of antidepressants<\/a>. Viagra helped women who had difficulty achieving orgasm, but did nothing to increase sex drive.<\/p>\n

Much attention has been given to treating male sexual dysfunction for years, but researchers are just now starting to seriously research possible treatments for female sexual dysfunction. Hopefully a female drug will come soon, because while men are enjoying Viagra’s helping hand, millions of frustrated women wait for their magic pink pill.<\/p>\n
