In a shocking move, the drugstore chain CVS has announced that it will no longer sell cigarettes. The move will see all CVS stores being tobacco-less by October 1st. The announcement surprised many, seeing that the sale of cigarettes accounts for $1.5 billion in revenue for the company.<\/p>\n
But CVS has remained firm on the proclamation, reasoning that offering harmful tobacco products is antithetical to the company’s goal of improving customer health. In a letter published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Troyen Brennan, CVS’ chief medical officer, wrote that the sale of tobacco products “would appear to sanction the most unhealthy habit a person can maintain.”<\/p>\n
The announcement comes on the heels of San Francisco’s city wide ban of the sale of cigarettes in pharmacies. CVS cited the San Francisco ban as one of several social and political shifts that have taken place over the last decade to make cigarettes more difficult to obtain and tobacco smoking less socially acceptable.<\/p>\n
While the smoking rates have fallen since 1965 from a whopping 42 percent of all adults smoking to a paltry 18 percent, experts say that the decline has slowed in recent years. Public health officials are saying that more aggressive tactics are needed to to encourage adults to stop smoking and ensure the younger generation doesn’t pick up the habit.<\/p>\n
CVS is the first large pharmacy to ban the sale of cigarettes, and the company is being applauded for it.
