Finally, new breakthroughs for women’s sexual health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Loss of sexual desire and pleasure can plague both men and women. But while men have enjoyed ready access to a range of safe and effective drugs for erection health in recent years, women haven\u2019t been so lucky. This might be changing. Not in the immediate future, but perhaps soon.<\/p>\n

The FDA is hesitant to approve drugs designed for women\u2019s sexual health. The reasons range from not enough evidence of improvement to insufficient data about the factors involved in loss of sexual desire in women.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that erection health is much more clear cut than the problems that many women face. The drugs that help men address a different set of physical issues. That\u2019s why Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors aren\u2019t generally prescribed for women\u2019s sexual health.<\/p>\n

Two drugs for women are in the news lately, though. The FDA has already rejected one, but the other, manufactured by the British company ORLIBID, might be available as soon as 2015, at least in the UK.<\/p>\n

The need for a safe and effective remedy for women is evident. The questions are: what will it be, and when will it happen?<\/p>\n

The Difference between Sexual Issues in Men and Women<\/strong><\/p>\n

Men and women have different sexual health needs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

When men experience problems achieving and maintaining an erection, the cause might be psychological or physiological. Loss of libido or sexual desire can create an environment where sexual stimulation doesn\u2019t have the same effect that it does on a man without libido issues.<\/p>\n

In men, stimulation of any of the 5 senses has the ability to trigger the series of processes that result in a healthy erection. The brain sends the signal down the spinal cord, the nerves get involved, then the chemical process continues until an erection is achieved.<\/p>\n

If a man has low libido, stimulation might have little or no effect, so an erection might not happen. That\u2019s not always the case, of course, but it is one way that sexual health in men can be compromised.<\/p>\n

If a man has a physical problem, such as damage to the spinal cord or nerves, blockages in blood vessels that supply the penis, or a number of other possible problems, all of the sexual simulation in the world might not lead to, or might interfere with sustaining, an erection.<\/p>\n

Women are different, of course. Problems with sexual health are more challenging to pin down. Low libido, or hypoactive sexual disorder (HSDD), is described by the Mayo Clinic<\/a> \u00a0as something that can occur for many reasons. Change in relationship, pregnancy, menopause, illness, and the use of some medications for depression or seizures can all decrease libido.<\/p>\n

Low libido in women is often addressed as something that could just be \u201cnormal,\u201d and no cause for alarm. Women who experience it might not agree with that assessment. Sexual intimacy and satisfaction isn\u2019t the domain of men, with women taking or leaving it.<\/p>\n

Libido isn\u2019t the only sexual problem that women face. Dyspareunia, or painful sex in women, is a catchall term with a lot of possible causes. Insufficient lubrication, which can happen at any time, but is normal after menopause, is a common and easily remedied problem. But endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, problems with the cervix, ovarian cysts, and many other potential issues might be to blame for painful sex.\u00a0Naturally, there is no single remedy for Dyspareunia.<\/p>\n

Can a \u201cLittle Pink Pill\u201d Help with HSDD?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a bit of confusion surrounding ORLIBID right now. Some news reports are calling a drug by that name, while other say this is the name of the manufacturing company.<\/p>\n

ORLIBID is the British manufacturer of a new drug for women; the working name of the drug, according to UK newspaper, The Telegraph<\/a> , is ORL 101<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ORL 101 is being called The Little Pink Pill<\/i>, an obvious spin off Viagra\u2019s moniker, The Little Blue Pill<\/i>. The basis of this new drug is melanin. It remains to be seen, whether it\u2019s actually pink.<\/p>\n

More confusion happens here, with some reports, like the New York Daily News<\/a> , referring to melatonin<\/i>. Melanin and melatonin are not the same thing. Melatonin helps you sleep (among other things). Melanin is responsible for the color in your skin, and for tanning. There is, however, a link between melanin and melatonin. In a study on skin physiology and pathology, published at the U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/a>, authors A. Slominski et al note melatonin\u2019s effect on the skin.<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re talking about melanin. ORL 101, made from a synthetic melanin, claims to boost a woman\u2019s sex drive, but that\u2019s not all; it also claims to suppress appetite. It’s a simple pill to use. Take it 15 minutes, give or take, before sexual activity, and it works for about two hours.<\/p>\n

A quick-acting boost in libido, and appetite suppression? Talk about a magic little pill!<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a battle going on over another drug that could help improve sexual health in women, says health and wellness editor, Rachel Pomerance Berl, for U.S. News and World Report<\/a> . Flibanserin was developed for women who experience HSDD. And in clinical trials, this medication showed real promise. Unfortunately, the FDA has shut it down. At least for now.<\/p>\n

When the FDA approves a drug, or doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s based in part on risk versus benefit. They say that the benefits women in the trials have experienced are not enough to outweigh the benefits.<\/p>\n

Proponents of Flibanserin disagree.<\/p>\n

The FDA has relied on \u201csatisfying sexual events\u201d in their evaluation, says Berl. The problem with that is who defines what is satisfying? In men, the effectiveness of Viagra is clear. Obviously. In women, satisfaction is not so easy to evaluate.<\/p>\n

The risks of Flibanserin include sleepiness and dizziness, effects that the drug\u2019s manufacturer says pale in comparison to the potential side effects of some erection health medications.<\/p>\n

Makers of Flibanserin are planning their appeal with the FDA. So the battle isn\u2019t over yet. The drug has been tested on 11,000 women. And the results, they say, are not insignificant.<\/p>\n

\u201cViagra for women\u201d might be a misnomer, and that could also be part of why it\u2019s so difficult to find a solution. Viagra is a drug that reacts a certain way to help correct a specific problem. HSDD in women is different from a man’s difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection, so it needs a different approach.<\/p>\n

ORL 101 might just be the different approach that works for many women. Information is still a bit thin on this drug, how the synthetic melanin works, and what it claims to do. An increase in libido is great. And for some, appetite suppression is a great bonus. But not all women want to lose weight, so the drug might carry other risks of losing too much weight. That information remains to be seen. In some parts of the world, such as the UK and Australia, the drug may be available as early as next year.<\/p>\n

So will 2014 be the year that a sexual health drug becomes available by prescription for women in America and across the globe? Probably not, but there is evidence of advances.
