Dating over 45 can be fun; just be safe about it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Remember when the biggest sexual concerns you had were getting pregnant and being safe to avoid STDs? Age might do away with one of those worries, but sexually transmitted diseases don\u2019t care who you are, or how many years you\u2019ve been around. You\u2019re not safe if you\u2019re not playing it safe.<\/p>\n

While there are no 100% guarantees against STDs, aside from, perhaps, abstinence, using a condom greatly reduces the risk of becoming infected. You learned about condoms in high school, or maybe younger. So why are so many people middle-aged or older contracting herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea?<\/p>\n

The National Health Service (NHS) for Scotland reveals some enlightening, and upsetting, statistics. They show a dramatic rise in STDs among Scottish citizens age 45 and over. This trend isn\u2019t restricted to Scotland, either. The federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the US reveal a similar trend.<\/p>\n

With older adults being more educated and experienced, you\u2019d think STDs wouldn\u2019t be much of an issue. But they are, and here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t STDs Usually Affect Younger People?<\/strong><\/p>\n

STDs are often thought of as a younger person\u2019s problem. When you\u2019re young, you may have several different sexual partners. It\u2019s obvious that you have to be safe, although not everyone is.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that number of younger people who contract STDs remains enormously larger than older people. However, the percentage increase is where those numbers become a bit of a shocker.<\/p>\n

Deadline News<\/a> (UK) says in 2012, there were 631 new cases of herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea reported in Scottish people over 45. For the under-25 group, that number was 15,135. But the percentages show the trend. For older people, there was a 146% increase from 2003 to 2012, while increase for people under 25 was 46%.<\/p>\n

As a result of these numbers, the citizens of Scotland have received a warning about re-learning just how important safe sex really is.<\/p>\n

Why the Rise in STDs Among Older Adults?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can enjoy a healthy sex life at any age.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Older people should be better educated and more experienced, so the increase in STDs in this age group merited some investigation. Some of the reasons are a lot simpler than you may think.<\/p>\n

People over the age of 45 may have grown up with the mindset that STDs happen to other people, and the only motivation to use a condom was to prevent pregnancy. Over 45, pregnancy is a lot less likely. So for some people, the main reason for using a condom \u201cback in the day\u201d could be a non-issue now.<\/p>\n

Other reasons may be the divorce rate, and death of a spouse. People who were married for many years, but then found themselves single again later in life, could easily think, \u201cI know I am healthy, most everyone else must be healthy, too.\u201d Unfortunately, that\u2019s flawed thinking because you just can\u2019t tell by looking at a person.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say that you have only had a few sexual partners in your life, and you know for a fact that you are disease free. Your next partner may have a different story. Remember the old campaign for safe sex: When you sleep with one person, you\u2019re also \u201csleeping with\u201d everyone in his or her past.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how diseases spread — from one person to the next. And you probably won\u2019t know all of the people in any partner\u2019s past.<\/p>\n

A Boon for Erection Health May Play a Role<\/strong><\/p>\n

Still other reasons for this alarming trend are better health and longer lifespans. The \u201cbetter health\u201d part sounds contradictory, but it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

A healthier population tends to live longer. So there are more people over the age of 45 in the world now, and older people are no less inclined to desire sex than anyone else. A man in his 70s might not think about it as often as a man in his 30s, but he thinks about it.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, older men who are otherwise very healthy might suffer from problems with erection health. Men with controlled health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, often face the same problem. The erection medications, Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, help many men improve their sexual health by encouraging their bodies produce erections more akin to the ones they had in youth.<\/p>\n

Each one featured a fashion ad from the 60s, and began with the statement, \u201cRemember wearing this? Then remember to wear this.\u201d\u00a0 At the side of the text was an image of a condom. Pretty simple. Remember being safe when you were young, and do it again now.<\/p>\n

Sexually transmitted diseases range from bothersome to deadly. You might meet the best dressed, most attractive person in the world, and never know that he or she is harboring an STD until it\u2019s too late to avoid contracting it. But the same might be true for someone you\u2019ve known a long time. It\u2019s not like friends want to advertise it.<\/p>\n

Gonorrhea might be at the lower end of the danger scale, as it\u2019s simple to cure. But older Americans are also susceptible to HIV\/AIDS. The CDC<\/a> \u00a0says people over the age of 55 accounted for 19% of Americans infected with the AIDS virus in 2010. And of newly infected people, the same age group accounted for 5%.<\/p>\n

Age is no protector against sexually transmitted diseases. As many of the safe sex ads have said, the best prevention is abstinence; the next best is to use a condom.<\/p>\n

With all of the evidence showing an increase in STDs among older people, erection health medication might seem like tempting the odds. It\u2019s not. Health includes sexual health, and there is no reason to deny yourself one of the greatest joys in life.<\/p>\n
