CEO of Hair Club New England, Steven Barth joins the show.<\/p>\n

Growing up on Long Island, Steven Barth was genetically disposed to hair loss \u2013 almost every man in his family lost his hair at a young age. Despite this, Steven always had a full head of hair and never thought the family curse would fall on him.\u00a0 However, during his senior year in college in 1976, he started noticing hair loss and the reality truly crippled him.\u00a0 Not only did the 1970s exemplify the era of hair as an important part of social culture, but short hair and shaved head styles weren\u2019t as commonplace or trendy as they are today.\u00a0 For someone who always took care of himself and cared about the image he presented to the world, Steven found himself with his self-esteem and confidence crushed by the change in his appearance that was completely beyond his control.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, solutions for those suffering from hair loss were not widely available. Steven spent extensive time researching his options, trying to find a solution that was affordable to someone just starting out in his career.\u00a0 Surgical options at the time (aka plugs) were expensive and looked unnatural.\u00a0 Toupees felt artificial and required a limited lifestyle (athletics and romance were out of the question).\u00a0 He investigated options everywhere \u2013 even hitchhiking to NYC to meet with a specialist who was among the first to purport that genetic hair loss could be countered with special shampoos to keep the scalp free of oil. Then, he found an ad in the back of the NY Post \u2013 and everything changed.<\/p>\n

When he entered the office at 187 Madison Avenue, he had no idea how much this one appointment would set the course for his life\u2019s work.\u00a0 His meeting with Sy Sperling lasted four hours, where Steven shared his insight into the frustration and hopelessness felt by those in his position.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t simply Steven\u2019s personal experience with hair loss, but the learnings gained during his search for a solution, which provided Sy with insight into the deeper, philosophical side of what hair loss means to a young man.\u00a0 It was this insight which provided Sy with the authentic message that tied hair loss to self-esteem that turned into the brand promised around which he built his young start-up.\u00a0\u00a0 At the end of the appointment, Sy quoted him $800 \u2013 to Steven it could have been $8,000.\u00a0 But his brother lent him the money; he had his first procedure and immediately after joined the company to help others experience the happiness and peace of mind that Hair Club had brought him.<\/p>\n
