{"id":419,"date":"2016-04-29T20:27:26","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T20:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edrugstore.md\/blog\/?p=419"},"modified":"2011-04-29T20:27:26","modified_gmt":"2011-04-29T20:27:26","slug":"check-for-autism-l0429","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/current-health-news\/check-for-autism-l0429\/","title":{"rendered":"Five minute check could detect autism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/docbaby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/docbaby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"86\" \/><\/a>A researcher from the San Diego School of Medicine has created a five minute checklist that may help doctors detect autism in children faster.\u00a0 Autism is a developmental disability that affects a person&#8217;s ability to communicate.\u00a0 Currently autism is typically diagnosed at the median age of 5.7 years old, but this new set of questions could mean a diagnosis at the age of one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am hoping it will become the standard of care,&#8221; researcher Karen Pierce, PhD, an assistant professor of neuroscience at the University of San Diego School of Medicine said about her new questionnaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently\u00a0137 pediatricians throughout San Diego County\u00a0helped Pierce with the study.\u00a0 Doctors asked parents the checklist of questions at\u00a0their babies 12 month wellness visit.\u00a0 With a\u00a0checklist of 24 items, doctors asked about the\u00a0child&#8217;s emotions, eye gaze, communication, gestures, and other behaviors.\u00a0 Here are several of the questions asked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you know when your child is happy and when your child is upset?<\/li>\n<li>Does your child do things just to get you to laugh?<\/li>\n<li>Does your child string sounds together, such as uh oh, mamma, gaga, bye-bye?<\/li>\n<li>When you call your child&#8217;s name, does he\/she respond by looking or turning toward you?<\/li>\n<li>Does your child wave to greet people?<\/li>\n<li>Does your child smile or laugh while looking at you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results show this set of questions detects Autism or other developmental problems 75% of the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-421\" style=\"width: 68px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/autismribbon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/autismribbon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"68\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autism ribbon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Autism Speaks supported the study as did the Organization for Autism Research and the National Institute of Mental Health.\u00a0\u00a0All organizations say this study is an important step forward noting earlier detection leads to earlier intervention and hopefully a better life for those with developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The new study is published online in the<em> Journal of Pediatrics.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A researcher from the San Diego School of Medicine has created a five minute checklist that may help doctors detect autism in children faster.\u00a0 Autism is a developmental disability that affects a person&#8217;s ability to communicate.\u00a0 Currently autism is typically diagnosed at the median age of 5.7 years old, but this new set of questions [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":421,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_autoblog_aioseo_focus_keyphrase":"","_autoblog_aioseo_title":"","_autoblog_aioseo_description":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-419","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current-health-news"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO Pro 4.9.10 - aioseo.com -->\n\t<meta name=\"description\" content=\"A researcher from the San Diego School of Medicine has created a five minute checklist that may help doctors detect autism in children faster.
