Analyzing the data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Using questionnaire data from more than 39,000 men between the ages of 55 and 74, researchers from the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute asked the men to identify what their hair-loss patterns had been at age 45 using a picture.<\/p>\n

Later, the researchers followed up and found that of the 1,138 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer (mean age of 72 at diagnosis), 51% of them had an aggressive form.<\/p>\n

Was there a link to baldness? It seems so. The men with frontal and moderate crown baldness at age 45 were 40% more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer than those who had no baldness.<\/p>\n

Why would there be a correlation? Evidence points to the fact that both male pattern baldness and prostate cancer are linked to higher levels of male sex hormones (androgens) and androgen receptors.<\/p>\n

Knowledge is power<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re worried that this link might apply to you, there are three vital pieces of information to consider:<\/p>\n

  1. The researchers found no increased risk for prostate cancer in men who had other patterns of baldness.<\/li>\n
  2. Even if you do develop prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society says that when including all stages of prostate cancer, the 15-year relative survival rate is 96%.<\/li>\n
  3. According to a 2017 Men\u2019s Health<\/em> article, certain baldness drugs like Propecia might lead to erectile dysfunction (ED). And the longer you take it, the more likely you are to develop ED, especially if you\u2019re young at the time. In addition, men under 42 who took baldness drugs for more than 205 days had almost five times the risk of developing PERSISTENT erectile dysfunction, compared to men who took the drug for less time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you experience ED, talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for an ED drug, such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis.
