More than 50 million American suffers from arthritis, according to the Arthritis Foundation.\u00a0 There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but the majority of cases include\u00a0inflammation of\u00a0the joints, causing pain and limited movement.\u00a0 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 21 million adults.\u00a0 A new study shows this condition takes its toll on the body and mind.<\/p>\n
The study<\/strong> \nNew information from this survey was\u00a0based on data collected by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, representing\u00a0more than 1 million U.S. adults.\u00a0 The information was collected over\u00a0the course of several years\u00a02003, 2005, and 2007. Indicators of health-related quality of life included:<\/p>\n

Overall health status<\/li>\n
Number of physically unwell days in the past 30 days<\/li>\n
Number of mentally unhealthy days in the past 30 days<\/li>\n
Days in which daily activities were restricted by poor physical or mental health<\/li>\n
Overall unhealthy days calculated from the sum of physically and mentally unhealthy days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The results<\/strong> \nThe survey showed 27% of people with arthritis reporter fair or poor overall health, and adults were more likely to have multiple days\u00a0a month where their condition stopped them from doing what they wanted.\u00a0 Researchers believe this survey should encourage doctors to create a treatment plan that does more than help with joint pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n
