And our traditional prostate cancer screening tests aren\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35125113\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly accurate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have recently developed a new, much more accurate, prostate cancer screening test called EpiSwitch Prostate Screening (PSE) blood test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Limitations of Traditional PSA Tests<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcf.org\/about-prostate-cancer\/what-is-prostate-cancer\/the-psa-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a protein secreted by the prostate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 in the blood. When there\u2019s a cancerous growth in the prostate, PSA levels tend to be high, but they can be elevated for other reasons as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High PSA levels only mean doctors should perform further tests to confirm or negate the presence of cancer. But the PSA test is known to be unreliable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of four men with elevated PSA levels, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/prostate-cancer\/should-i-have-psa-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three do not have prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And out of seven men with prostate cancer, one will have normal PSA levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this adds up to an accuracy of around 55% for PSA-based prostate cancer detection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low accuracy means many men undergo unnecessary and invasive procedures following their PSA tests. Worse, some cancer cases escape detection, leading to worse treatment prospects and outcomes. They discovered that some biomarkers behave differently when prostate cancer is present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much More Accurate Is EpiSwitch than PSA Alone?\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By measuring five epigenetic biomarkers in addition to a PSA test, doctors can improve the accuracy of prostate cancer detection significantly.
