They agreed that many factors contribute to this trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time Is a Factor<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Dr. Amini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasized, \u201cThe peak age for diagnosis of HPV-related oral cancers is typically in the 40s and 50s, as the individuals who were exposed to HPV through oral sex in their earlier years are now reaching an age where cancer is more likely to develop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Jennifer Silver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dentist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/macleodtraildental.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macleod Trail Dental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explained, \u201cMen in their 40s and 50s have had more time to accumulate these exposures, increasing their risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Green<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that the prevalence of HPV-related oral cancers in heterosexual men in their 40s and 50s may be related to the timing of HPV vaccination. Sex hormones may also play a role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Sridhar PS <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreed that men may have a weaker immune response to HPV than women. He added that \u201cmen may not be aware of the symptoms of oral cancer, such as a sore throat, earache, or lump in the neck, and may delay seeking medical attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Summary: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our experts agree that multiple factors contribute to the higher incidence of HPV in heterosexual males in their 30s and 40s \u2014 including time, sexual habits, and lifestyle risk factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Will the Recent Rise in Oral Sex Lead to More HPV-Related Oral Cancers?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our experts see a link between more people having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/std-sexually-transmitted-diseases-treatments\/is-oral-sex-safe-sex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the risk of HPV-related oral cancers. She mentioned that while there has been a rise in oral cancer cases, the increase is proportionally much smaller than the increase in oral sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also highlighted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jebm.12159\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that suggests oral sex \u201cis only associated with a 15 percent increase in the risk of developing oral cancer, so it\u2019s unlikely the rise in oral sex has or will lead to a substantial increase in oral cancer rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Sridhar PS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agreed that the rise in oral sex may lead to more HPV-related cancers, but clarified, \u201cIt is not clear how much of this increase is due to HPV alone, and how much is due to other factors, such as smoking or alcohol use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Green <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreed with the rest of the panel but reminded us, \u201cIt&#8217;s important to remember that contracting HPV does not always lead to cancer, and often, infections clear over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Summary:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Our experts feel that there is a potential link between the rise in oral sex and an increased risk of HPV-related oral cancers.
