It also delivers a drug that limits further prostate growth, easing urinary symptoms from BPH over a longer period of time.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unlike other surgical treatments for BPH, Optilume showed no effect on sexual functioning.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>There are other options for BPH treatment, and men should consider their options carefully.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in September 2023 offers new hope for BPH sufferers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auajournals.org\/doi\/10.1097\/JU.0000000000003568\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PINNACLE Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in the Journal of Urology, looked at a new, minimally invasive surgical device for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The device, called the Optilume BPH Catheter System, shows promise to help treat LUTS with minimal impact and effective long-term results. In this article, we\u2019ll talk about Optilume, the study and its implications, and how this device may be able to help people with BPH live more normally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But first, a bit about LUTS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Are LUTS?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/mens-health\/best-treatment-for-enlarged-prostate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may know that around age 25, the prostate begins growing after a brief pause after puberty, then continues to grow for the rest of your life. The prostate surrounds your urethra, or urinary tract, and once it reaches a certain size, your prostate can begin compressing it, interfering with normal urination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LUTS is the short name for the lower urinary tract symptoms caused by BPH. These symptoms can include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More frequent urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sudden and urgent need to urinate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular need to urinate overnight (nocturia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty urinating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak or intermittent urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incomplete emptying of the bladder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LUTS become more common in men they age; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/benign-prostatic-hyperplasia-bph-beyond-the-basics\/print#:~:text=In%20men%20over%20age%2080,urinary%20tract%20symptoms%20(LUTS).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 80% of men over 80 have BPH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, the options for treatment have generally been surgical procedures, which have enough drawbacks that many men choose to simply go on living with the symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optilume takes a different approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How Does Optilume Work?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2.jpeg-min-e1697194495293.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35825 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2.jpeg-min-e1697194495293.jpg\" alt=\"elderly man happily dancing in his living room\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optilume is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/recently-approved-devices\/optilume-bph-catheter-system-p220029\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medical device consisting of a surgical balloon coated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/treatment\/drugs\/paclitaxel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paclitaxel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drug that stops cell division. The balloon is inserted into the rectum and inflated to push the prostate away from the urethra. The balloon remains inflated for about ten minutes. After removal, the paclitaxel limits prostate growth, providing long-term relief of LUTS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optilume was designed to be minimally invasive, so healing times are shorter than with BPH procedures, and there\u2019s less post-surgical difficulty as the body heals. The new study has shown just how effective the procedure actually is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Does The PINNACLE Study Say About Optilume?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3.jpeg-min-1-e1697194594222.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3.jpeg-min-1-e1697194594222.jpg\" alt=\"older man eating a salad\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PINNACLE study was conducted using a double-blind method, so neither the researchers nor the patients knew if they were getting the treatment, with the men in the study randomly assigned to one of two groups. Then they tested the results using patient surveys and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/medical-tests\/uroflowmetry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uroflowmetry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The study participants were then followed over the course of a year.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3.jpeg-min-1-e1697194594222.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-Term Results<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The men who underwent the procedure reported a significant improvement in symptoms \u2014 an average of 30%. These included four cases of post-procedure bleeding in the urine, which were treated and resolved without any lasting issues. To this point, the most effective surgeries have gone through the urethra and either sliced away prostate tissue, or killed some of it using lasers, ultrasound, or steam, and then removed it.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/4.jpeg-min-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this type of surgery is a substantial improvement over previous techniques, especially when performed using robotic tools, there\u2019s a risk of damaging sexual function, usually due to injury during the surgery.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/4.jpeg-min-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a risk of urinary strictures, a narrowing of the urethra due to trauma, with more-invasive procedures.
