\"\"<\/a>Steve Valencic was at home when he got a call that his 81 year old father had gone missing.\u00a0 His dad, John Valencic, was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.\u00a0 Valencic had left his home near Minneapolis to see his accountant, but never made it.\u00a0 Police were immediatley called in to help, but there was no sign of him until\u00a034 hours when\u00a0a patrol officer found him driving along a highway going 25 mile per hour.\u00a0\u00a0The officer got him to the hospital, where\u00a0Steve Valencic was reunited\u00a0with his dad.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
“Oh it was such a relief,” he said.\u00a0 “So many things\u00a0could have\u00a0happened to him during that period of time, we’re lucky to have him back.”<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
When Steve Valencic started asking his dad about\u00a0what happened\u00a0he couldn’t\u00a0remember a thing.\u00a0 “I asked him where he had been, and where he had slept and he didn’t know.”\u00a0 Valencic had lost track\u00a0of time, and\u00a0couldn’t understand why he was in the hospital.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/a>Doctors say it’s a common problem with\u00a0Alzheimer’s patients.\u00a0 The disease progresses differently in each patient, but\u00a0is always associated with memory loss.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Catherine Clairmont works for a company that specializes in Alzheimer’s care, she gives these three pieces of advice to families:<\/div>\n
1.) Learn more about the disease<\/div>\n
The Alzheimer’s Assocation is a great resource, but no matter who you talk with make sure you get your questions answered.\u00a0 Families should learn about the symptoms, treatment options, and care facilities in their area.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
2.)\u00a0Make a plan<\/div>\n
“It’s best to start planning early,” Clairmont said.\u00a0 “As soon as the diagnosis happens it’s really important to start putting together a plan for future care.”<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
3.)Monitor safety<\/div>\n
“Once a loved one is no longer safe by themselves, it’s time to get help from a care facility.”<\/div>\n
Symptoms of Alzheimer’s:<\/strong><\/div>\n
1.) Memory Loss<\/div>\n
According the Alzheimer’s Assocation, memory loss that disrupts a person’s daily life is the number one sign of Alzheimer’s.<\/div>\n
2.) Challenges in problem solving<\/div>\n
3.) Difficulty completing familiar tasks<\/div>\n
4.) Confusion with time or place<\/div>\n
