However, gay and bisexual men are at a higher risk for certain types of cancer. Learning about these types of cancer can help you to take action to prevent or detect them early on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article highlights the issue of cancer disparities among gay and bisexual men, emphasizing the importance of addressing these disparities for improved health outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cancer in Gay and Bisexual Men<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men face disparities in cancer diagnosis and treatment when compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This means that they are more likely to be diagnosed with certain types of cancer and to experience poorer health outcomes than heterosexual men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fact that sexual minority groups have been largely overlooked in most population health surveys, available research suggests significant cancer disparities among gay and bisexual men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, data from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30043193\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Health Interview Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that gay men had approximately 50 percent increased odds of reporting a cancer diagnosis than heterosexual men surveyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/10.1200\/JCO.2017.72.5465\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large-scale studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrate that gay and bisexual men have an increased risk for cancer linked to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the human papillomavirus (HPV).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Understanding Cancer Disparities<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone can develop cancer, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. However, leading health authorities recognize that underserved and marginalized groups face disparities for a number of health disparities, including cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/understanding\/disparities#:~:text=Cancer%20disparities%20(sometimes%20called%20cancer,long%20people%20survive%20after%20diagnosis)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Cancer Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes cancer disparities as differences in cancer measures for a specific population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example measures include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Incidence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of new cancer cases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevalence:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The number of all existing cancer cases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mortality: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death from cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Survival: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long people with cancer survive following diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Morbidity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Any cancer-related health complications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other measures:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additional measures may include screening rates, financial burden, stage at diagnosis, or other quality of life measures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite advances in research and health care, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8624572\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people experience poorer mental and physical health outcomes than their heterosexual peers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aacrjournals.org\/cebp\/article\/25\/4\/573\/71062\/Recommendations-for-Cancer-Epidemiologic-Research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers recognize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that LGBTQ+ populations often experience delayed cancer diagnosis, delayed or insufficient care, and poor patient-reported outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional research is needed to establish the extent of cancer disparities in gay and bisexual men. For example, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dpcpsi.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/SGMRO_2018_PortfolioAnalysis_RF508_FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over NIH-funded studies related to sexual and gender minority groups. There are several social and system-level factors that contribute to these disparities. Understanding these factors is critical for advancing the health and well-being of gay and bisexual men.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stigma and Discrimination<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stigma and discrimination continue to negatively impact the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. This occurs on a personal level and within broader societal and national contexts.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cites <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/msmhealth\/stigma-and-discrimination.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigma and discrimination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a major influence on the health and well-being of gay and bisexual men. For example, homophobia can affect whether these men seek healthcare services or disclose their sexual orientation to their providers, which can affect the quality of care they receive.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barriers to Care<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Americans face staggering barriers to quality care. In addition to homophobia, stigma, and discrimination, gay and bisexual men may also face the following barriers to accessing care:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cultural competency barriers. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providers may lack awareness, understanding, and training on the specific needs of gay and bisexual men. This means they may not offer the necessary prevention education, screening, or treatment options to the patient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Financial barriers. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial barriers include things having low income, having no or inadequate insurance, not having access to transportation, or not being able to take time off work for medical appointments. The costs of medical appointments, screenings, diagnostic tests, and treatment can hinder someone from seeking or following up on care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limited awareness.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Limited public education regarding cancer risks and considerations for gay and bisexual men may contribute to lower engagement in prevention and screening.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Health Disparities<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual minority populations often experience minority stress. This refers to chronic stressors related to stigma, discrimination, harassment, or marginalization. Minority stress contributes to poor mental health, behavioral health, and physical health outcomes.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+ people also have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1471-244X-8-70\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and substance use disorder, than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. Having a mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression, can influence whether or not someone seeks care, engages in healthy behaviors, or follows up with treatment.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unique Risks<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men may face additional health risks related to their sexual behaviors. For example, men who have sex with men (MSM) have an increased risk for certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that are linked to some cancers.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9032332\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are at a higher risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/std-sexually-transmitted-diseases-treatments\/hpv-in-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men who have sex with women. Until recently, HPV awareness and prevention were primarily aimed at women because it can cause cervical cancer. However, HPV is also strongly linked to oral, penile, and anal cancers.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men living with compromised immune systems or other comorbidities may be at an even greater risk for developing HPV-related cancer. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jnci\/article\/107\/4\/dju503\/893667?login=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that MSM living with HIV\/AIDS have a significantly higher risk of developing HPV-associated cancers than the general population.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2.jpeg-1-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited Data<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men are historically underrepresented within cancer research. However, certain types of cancer tend to occur at higher rates among gay and bisexual men.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anal Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anal cancer is relatively rare among the general population. However, research suggests that MSM, especially those who have HIV, have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.3322\/caac.21288\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly higher risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of being diagnosed with anal cancer than the general population.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men who engage in anal sex have higher rates of HPV infection. This is one factor that contributes to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00918369.2022.2132574\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk for MSM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop HPV-associated anal cancer.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to HPV, tobacco use also increases a person\u2019s risk for anal cancer. Gay and bisexual men <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7218a1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoke cigarettes at higher rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their heterosexual counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research suggests that gay men have higher rates of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/current-health-news\/colon-cancer-and-intimacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the general population. Additional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2659454\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that gay and bisexual men may be less likely to engage in recommended screening for colorectal and prostate cancer. However, some results are mixed, and additional research is needed to understand the link between sexual orientation and colorectal cancer risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, regardless of sexual orientation. Researchers continue to explore the relationship between sexual orientation and prostate cancer risk.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4770844\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that gay and bisexual men diagnosed with prostate cancer tend to have poorer outcomes related to sexual function and quality of life. For example, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6953377\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that gay and bisexual men have poorer urinary, bowel, and quality of life outcomes following treatment for prostate cancer.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Research suggests that certain sexual and gender minority groups have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7369213\/#:~:text=SMM%20have%20increased%20odds%20of,indoor%20tanning%20than%20heterosexual%20women.&amp;text=7.5%25%20prevalence%20of%20indoor%20tanning,days%20higher%20among%20indoor%20tanners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased lifetime risk of skin cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Specifically, gay and bisexual men report higher rates of both skin cancer and indoor tanning bed use.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testicular Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies have shown <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/viagra\/erectile-dysfunction-after-testicular-cancer-viagra-can-help\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a higher incidence of testicular cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among men with HIV\/AIDS. Research on testicular cancer risk for MSM is currently limited. Additional research is needed to explore this connection.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Additional Cancer Disparities Among Gay and Bisexual Men<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to having an increased risk for developing certain types of cancer, gay and bisexual men also face disparities in cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screening and Diagnosis<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that gay and bisexual men have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0027968423000287\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower rates of screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for certain types of cancer, despite having an increased lifetime risk for cancer diagnosis. For example, they tend to have lower <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7864377\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for prostate and colorectal cancer.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3.jpeg.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay and bisexual men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/10.1200\/JCO.2016.34.15_suppl.e16548\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later stages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than heterosexual men.
