{"id":3515,"date":"2017-04-07T15:12:01","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T15:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.viamedic.com\/blog\/?p=3515"},"modified":"2017-04-07T15:12:01","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T15:12:01","slug":"study-ed-taking-a-toll-on-men-under-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/study-ed-taking-a-toll-on-men-under-40\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: ED Taking a Toll on Men Under 40"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_3523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3523\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/65715862_s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3523\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Study: ED Taking a Toll on Men Under 40<\/figcaption><\/figure>People often think of erectile dysfunction (ED) as \u201can old man\u2019s problem.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The truth is, ED affects young men as well, and it\u2019s not an inevitable part of aging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Younger men and ED: psychological or physical?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study published in the <em>Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/em> reported that 26% of men who<\/p>\n<p>went to an outpatient clinic for newly developed ED were under 40. <\/p>\n<p>Of those men, nearly half had severe ED, while only 40% of their over-40 counterparts had severe ED.<\/p>\n<p>As might be expected, compared to the older men, the under-40 patients weighed less, had higher testosterone levels, had fewer medical conditions, and smoked cigarettes and\/or used illegal drugs more.<\/p>\n<p>Still, ED is a marker for cardiovascular function, and something doctors are looking at in a new light among their younger patients. <\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/em>\u2019s editor, Irwin Goldstein, it used to be common for doctors to assume that their younger patients\u2019 ED issues were primarily psychological, not related to vascular problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now need to consider regularly assessing the integrity of arterial inflow in young patients,\u201d explains Goldstein. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdentifying arterial pathology in such patients may be very relevant to their overall long-term health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treating ED in younger men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that most men under 40 can take a prescription drug\u2014such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra\u2014for their ED. <\/p>\n<p>The few exceptions are men who have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently had a heart attack, stroke or life-threatening irregular heart rate<\/li>\n<li>Experienced chest pains during sex<\/li>\n<li>High or low blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although some men experience side effects from ED drugs, in general, they are neither common nor serious. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Upset stomach<\/li>\n<li>Flushing<\/li>\n<li>Nasal congestion<\/li>\n<li>Back pain<\/li>\n<li>Hearing loss<\/li>\n<li>Changes in vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each medication is different, so if one ED drug doesn\u2019t work for you, or if the side effects are too unbearable, it\u2019s worth trying another.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People often think of erectile dysfunction (ED) as \u201can old man\u2019s problem.\u201d The truth is, ED affects young men as well, and it\u2019s not an inevitable part of aging.
