The study<\/strong>
\nAccording to a report by MSNBC, \u201cA new study released by the Food and Drug Administration reviewed the medical history of more than 800,000 U.S. women taking different forms of birth control between 2001 and 2007. On average, women taking Yaz had a 75 percent greater chance of experiencing a blood clot than women taking older birth control drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n

This particular birth control<\/a> has a new ingredient, drospirenone, which researchers believe is causing the unsafe spike in the blood clots.<\/p>\n

Not the only pill containing new ingredient<\/strong>
\nBirth-control pills<\/a> that contain drospirenone include Bayer’s Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Safyral; Sandoz’s Syeda and Loryna; as well as Barr Laboratories’ Ocella, Watson Pharmaceuticals’ Zarah and Teva Pharmaceuticals’ Loryna.<\/p>\n

Not the first inquiry<\/strong>
\n\"\"Several months ago the FDA forced Bayer to run corrective ads about Yaz.\u00a0 They had claimed the pill helped clear acne and battle severe premenstrual cramps.\u00a0 The FDA felt the maker\u2019s overstated the pill’s effectiveness and forced new commercials.\u00a0 Now, scientists are testing the pills safety.<\/p>\n

Reaction from medical community<\/strong>
\nSome doctors are disturbed that Yaz was even approved by the FDA in the first place.\u00a0 “At a certain point we have to ask why the FDA continues to approve drugs that are less safe and have no benefit compared to drugs already on the market,” said Dr. Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Women and Families, a consumer group for women\u2019s health issues. “With all these different birth control options, why take the most expensive one that can also kill you?”<\/p>\n
