Here are some of the most interesting things we\u2019ve learned about Viagra over its quarter century on the market.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Viagra was developed by accident.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/sildenafil-citrate\/\">Sildenafil<\/a>, the active ingredient in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/buy-viagra\/\">Viagra<\/a>, was <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-0348-7945-3_1\">originally developed to treat hypertension<\/a> and angina pectoris, a type of chest pain associated with heart disease. Sildenafil is a vasodilator, opening up blood vessels, and the goal was to lessen the pain. Its ability to make it easier to get and keep an erection was a side effect discovered as researchers were running human tests.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Viagra was the first oral drug for treating erectile dysfunction.<\/h3>\n<p>As hard as it might be to believe now, with drugs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/cialis\/\">Cialis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/vardenafil\/\">Levitra <\/a>available, before Viagra arrived in 1998 there was no oral treatment for ED. Many treatments were either mechanical, such as vacuum pumps, or required injections directly into the penis.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The name for Viagra existed before the drug.<\/h3>\n<p>Pfizer\u2019s advertising department had developed the name \u201cViagra,\u201d combining the words \u201cvitality\u201d and \u201cNiagra,\u201d but hadn\u2019t found the right medication to pair it with. During testing, Viagra had the less catchy name of UK-92480.<\/p>\n<h3>4. It\u2019s also prescribed \u201coff-label,\u201d or technically unapproved for that use, to help treat Reynaud\u2019s phenomenon, a syndrome where small arteries spasm and reduce blood flow to the extremities.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, though, to only use Viagra in the prescribed dose and timing from your doctor. Viagra should generally only be used once per day, about 30 minutes to an hour before intimacy.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Viagra is a treatment for ED, not a cure.<\/h3>\n<p>While the effects of Viagra can feel miraculous, it doesn\u2019t cure ED; if you stop taking Viagra, the ED will return. Reversing ED is possible, but it takes more than the little blue pill, and if it doesn\u2019t work, you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/viagra\/when-viagra-doesnt-work\/\">consider alternate treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Viagra can\u2019t prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.<\/h3>\n<p>Because of Viagra\u2019s effectiveness and the way it works, many people have assumed it can do everything: prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), block pregnancy, increase libido, and even automatically give you an erection.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, Viagra can only help you become erect and stay erect when you\u2019re sexually stimulated. It can\u2019t increase your libido, and it certainly can\u2019t prevent pregnancy or STDs. Always practice safe sex with your partner.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Not everyone can take Viagra.<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re using heart or blood pressure medication such as nitrates, have liver or kidney disease, or have vision concerns, you shouldn\u2019t take Viagra.<\/p>\n<p>While women aren\u2019t explicitly at risk from taking Viagra, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/viagra\/can-women-take-viagra\/\">not clear what benefits they derive from it<\/a>, so it\u2019s better left to men, at least for now.<\/p>\n<h3>8. But the idea of flying hamsters on Viagra was so funny that they won an IgNobel, an award celebrating odd or trivial achievements in science. The actual Nobel remains, alas, out of reach.<\/p>\n<h3>9. If you take Viagra, you should avoid grapefruit.<\/h3>\n<p>While nobody is entirely sure just which chemical in grapefruit interferes with prescription medication like Viagra, what is known is that it binds to the enzyme CYP3A4 in the gastrointestinal tract. This prevents the body from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/viagra\/what-is-viagras-half-life-and-what-does-that-mean\/\">processing many drugs<\/a>, including Viagra, as quickly as they normally do.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the effect is only temporary, so if you\u2019ve just had some grapefruit juice, you should be OK to take Viagra after a day or so.<\/p>\n<h3>10. A heavy meal can slow down Viagra\u2019s effectiveness.<\/h3>\n<p>Similarly, a high-fat meal may slow down how quickly Viagra enters the bloodstream. So, if you\u2019re thinking about romance after dinner, stick with something lighter. And there\u2019s another good reason that you should skip fatty meals if you\u2019re taking Viagra \u2014 they may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/mens-health\/diabetes-and-ed-step-away-from-the-bacon\/\">interfering with erectile function over the long term<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>11. Viagra can keep your flowers fresher for longer.<\/h3>\n<p>It may be an expensive way of doing it, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/319\/7205\/274.2\">Viagra works in flower stems<\/a> the same way it does in your body, opening up vessels in the stems of cut flowers to keep water flowing into them.<\/p>\n<h3>12.
