We found that the truth is substantially different from the stories passed around on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Happens When You Take Viagra?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, or PDE5i, which means it keeps the PDE5 enzyme from acting on, and thereby limiting, a specific chemical in the body, cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitric oxide clings to cGMP, which relaxes blood vessels throughout the body. But, of course, not everybody takes the correct dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Can You Overdose On Viagra?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction\/what-happens-if-you-take-too-much-cialis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take too much of any drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but your experience will depend heavily on the drug, what it does, and your personal health history. He experienced green vision, stomach cramps, and a headache that lasted a few days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse, for a total of five days, he developed a \u201cuseless\u201d erection with the slightest stimulation, such as brushing against something.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may sound funny, it\u2019s also dangerous. Priapism, an erection lasting four hours or longer, can seriously damage the penis and even cause permanent erectile dysfunction. Fortunately, the subject of our story got treatment and seems to have suffered no serious injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision problems are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64468-sildenafil-overdose-vision-loss.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a common theme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in verifiable overdose reports, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaophthalmology\/article-abstract\/2720488\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least one of which<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resulted in permanent retinal damage. While most of these involve extreme doses of liquid sildenafil \u2014 750 to 1500 milligrams \u2014 at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8437635\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one case study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed vision problems with a dose as low as 200 milligrams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably the most extreme overdose on record is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jat\/article\/39\/7\/572\/819563?login=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6500 milligrams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when a man in his 50s tried to poison himself with sildenafil. He survived for 24 hours before he was found and checked into a hospital. This man was lucky; with only moderate treatment, he made a full recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Is There Any Risk in Taking Viagra?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Viagra has been around for over twenty years and is a well-understood medication, there are some situations where caution is recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your risk for severe reactions increases if you have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had a cardiac or cerebrovascular event in the last six months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of congestive heart failure or unstable angina<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypotension (low blood pressure) or uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A case study on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12507258\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the only currently known fatal Viagra overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrates these risks.
