Technological advances have created alternatives to TURP, however, and the former gold standard may soon become obsolete. Has that time come already?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>HoLEP vs. TURP<\/h4>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lAlX7hqw5-0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h4>The HoLEP procedure<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A TURP procedure requires researchers to insert a camera and a cutting instrument (electrical loop) through the urethra of BPH patients. With it, they cut away the excess prostate tissue that blocks urine flow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HoLEP procedure uses a laser as a cutting instrument, eliminating bleeding. Doctors use a separate instrument to cut up and remove the resulting tissue.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446381\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers predicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that HoLEP would replace TURP as the gold standard of BPH surgery. They reasoned that HoLEP could produce superior results with fewer complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to TURP, HoLEP produces better <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/menshealth\/calculator-international-prostatism-symptom-score-ipss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-reported outcomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients. It also improves maximum urinary flow to a higher degree than TURP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers noted that, unlike TURP, HoLEP creates lasting results. It was the only BPH treatment in the study that did not lead to re-operation with the same problem within five years. Through it, they release sterile water vapor into the enlarged prostate tissue, damaging it.
