The prostate is close to the wall of the rectum. When radiation hits the prostate during therapy, it also affects the rectum. SpaceOAR creates distance between the two organs, protecting the rectum from radiation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is SpaceOAR, and how does it Work?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpaceOAR is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/27\/9\/2902\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrogel<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spacer that absorbs water and retains its shape. It uses natural hydrogels. Hyaluronic acid is a natural hydrogel that gives volume and elasticity to the skin, among other functions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors inject SpaceOAR into the space between the prostate and the rectal wall. Once there, the substance expands and creates an additional distance of about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/md-journal\/Fulltext\/2021\/12100\/SpaceOAR_hydrogel_spacer_injection_prior_to.49.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.3 cm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the two organs. This distance is enough to protect the rectal wall from the majority of the radiation hitting the prostate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OAR stands for Organ At-Risk, referring to the rectum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiation-based prostate cancer treatment is now standard. New technologies allow doctors to achieve high precision with radiation. The natural space between the prostate and the rectal wall is too small, however. By increasing this space, SpaceOAR hydrogel creates the separation doctors need to avoid the rectum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>SpaceOAR Benefits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpaceOAR hydrogel is a simple and effective solution to a complicated problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiation-based prostate cancer treatment is taxing on the body, and if radiation hits other organs, it\u2019s worse.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Efficacy<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate cancer patients who do not receive a SpaceOAR injection before radiation therapy are more likely to develop complications. They may experience more bowel problems and urinary irregularities. Their sexual quality of life may decline as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redjournal.org\/article\/S0360-3016(16)33598-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> determined that SpaceOAR significantly reduces rectal toxicity in patients receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Quality of Life<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpaceOAR significantly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8655415\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the self-reported quality of life of patients. Researchers measured good treatment outcomes while preserving patients\u2019 quality of life with SpaceOAR. Only 59 patients took part in the study, however.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Stabilization<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SpaceOAR insert limits the movements of the prostate in response to urination, flatulence, and other bodily functions involving the area. During a treatment session, doctors prefer a stable prostate.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>A Solution for Diverse Patients<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors have used other methods for spacing in prostate radiation therapy, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bjui-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/bju.12624\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiducial markers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acr.amegroups.com\/article\/view\/7006\/html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calypso beacons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some do not qualify.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large abdominal girth, hip replacements, pacemakers, and various medications disqualify patients from using these more traditional solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpaceOAR does not contain electronics or drug-like chemicals. It is, therefore, suitable for use in many patients.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Lasting Benefits<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After doctors inject SpaceOAR, they must wait a week for the insert to settle. SpaceOAR then remains in place for at least three months. It creates a comfortable window for doctors to perform several radiation treatments. A treatment course <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/prostate-cancer\/treating\/radiation-therapy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes several weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but typically less than a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body absorbs and eliminates SpaceOAR in about six months.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Safety<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hydrogel material SpaceOAR uses is mostly water. The body tolerates it well.\u00a0 And it does not interfere with other treatments and medications. It works well with hydrogel spacers like SpaceOAR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>SpaceOAR Risks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inserting an outside substance into the body for three to six months always <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/end.2019.0431\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entails risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the possibility of discomfort. When the site of the injection is the highly sensitive perineum, these risks multiply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors use local anesthesia before injecting SpaceOAR. Transrectal ultrasound guidance allows them to inject the hydrogel exactly where they need it. The injection may still be painful, and the hydrogel material may cause some pain and discomfort before the body accepts its presence.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Common Complications<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The insertion procedure is relatively simple, but does not always go according to plan. The injection may cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needle and hydrogel material penetration into a nearby blood vessel or organ<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation of the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injury to the rectum or prostate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Severe Complications<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8882263\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have documented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> several cases of patients experiencing severe complications from SpaceOAR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaphylaxis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostatic sepsis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abscesses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perineal drainage consisting of puss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The injury and erosion of the rectal wall<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fistula in the rectum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulmonary embolism\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8882263\/#SD1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some cases of toxicity and one death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/mens-health\/users-guide-to-the-prostate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a delicate balancing act. Using a needle for injection becomes hazardous as it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urotoday.com\/recent-abstracts\/urologic-oncology\/prostate-cancer\/91544-interdisciplinary-consensus-statement-on-indication-and-application-of-a-hydrogel-spacer-for-prostate-radiotherapy-based-on-experience-in-more-than-250-patients.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may spread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancerous cells through healthy tissue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients who have already received radiation therapy, cryotherapy, or high-intensity ultrasound therapy for prostate cancer are not good candidates for SpaceOAR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with blood clotting or bleeding problems are also unsuitable candidates for SpaceOAR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors will not use a hydrogel spacer in patients who are on anticoagulants. To use SpaceOAR, these patients must discontinue their anticoagulant therapies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory diseases like prostatitis and anorectal inflammation also disqualify patients from SpaceOAR use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis increase the chance of bleeding. Therefore, doctors won\u2019t use SpaceOAR in patients suffering from these diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>SpaceOAR and Erectile Dysfunction<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you can answer the question \u201cwhat is SpaceOAR?\u201d you probably want to know whether it can help your erections.
