However, some people feel neither male nor female, or even a combination of both. It\u2019s up to each person to determine which term best aligns with their gender identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Who Experiences Gender Dysphoria?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people can experience distress or anxiety related to their gender identity at some point in their lives. When someone experiences persistent psychological distress due to the mismatch between their gender identity and their assigned sex at birth, it\u2019s referred to as gender dysphoria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being transgender is not a mental health or psychological disorder. The psychological distress of gender dysphoria and discrimination someone experiences can lead to both physical and mental health challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7076333\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 78 percent of transgender men and 73 percent of transgender women experienced gender dysphoria by the age of seven. Some study participants reported experiencing gender dysphoria as young as age four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people oppose including the clinical diagnosis of gender dysphoria within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). However, others argue that having the diagnosis available can help transgender people access care.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>How Many People Identify Outside the Gender Binary?<\/h4>\n<p>For many years, the instruments used to collect demographics within the United States did not include questions about gender identity. In more recent years, population studies have aimed to estimate the number of people who identify as transgender or nonbinary.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2016.303578\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peer-reviewed meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in 2017 found that close to 1 million adults in the United States identified as transgender. The authors concluded that this was likely a conservative estimate. This study used the term transgender, which does not encompass all gender-noncomforming identities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, the Williams Institute conducted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/trans-adults-united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to estimate the number of youth and adults who identify as transgender. This study found that over 1.6 million youth and adults identify as transgender in the United States. This represents approximately 0.6 percent of people age 13 and older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Williams Institute also conducted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/nonbinary-lgbtq-adults-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to estimate the number of people who identify as nonbinary within the LGBTQ+ community. This study found that close to 11 percent of LGBTQ+ adults (18-60 years of age) identify as nonbinary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Williams Institute used national data sets from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for their studies. The studies are not peer-reviewed, but they are the best estimates available for transgender and nonbinary people living in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>How are People Discriminated Against for Their Gender Identity?<\/h4>\n<p>Many states do not have laws to protect people against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/know-your-rights\/lgbtq-rights#am-i-protected-from-discrimination-in-public-accommodations-like-shops-and-restaurants\">discrimination<\/a> based on gender identity and expression. Many transgender and nonbinary people are the target of prejudice, discrimination, and even hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/resources\/NTDS_Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Transgender Discrimination Report <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows that 63 percent of transgender and gender-nonconforming people surveyed had experienced serious acts of discrimination.
