In this article, we\u2019ll look at the science and sort out fact from myth when it comes to abstinence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Is Sexual Abstinence?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual abstinence is not having sex for a long period of time. It\u2019s often confused with celibacy, which is when somebody engages in abstinence for religious or social reasons. Abstinence, however, can be caused by many things. For example, people with heart conditions are often abstinent because of the health risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflation of abstinence and celibacy has made understanding what happens to the body medically challenging, and the topic is understudied, particularly in men. That doesn\u2019t mean, however, that sex is a magic cure for stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Faster brain aging.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A study of rats found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23460298\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular sex helped with age-related declines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in neurological function. That said, whether this is true of humans remains largely unstudied.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Relationship issues.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Depending on the cause of the abstinence, relationships can become strained as partners can think they\u2019re less sexually attractive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Immune system effects.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A study of college students found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15217036\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher levels of some immune system markers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their saliva, although what this means is still being studied.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>More emotional intensity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While there\u2019s no direct connection between sex and long-term emotional state, there\u2019s some evidence that a lack of sex can feed into your emotional state. However, it\u2019s very dependent on your personal situation; one person may struggle with depression, while another may find themselves more engaged with other aspects of their lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies also exist that support the idea that abstinence can lead to ED. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22684564\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2012 Chinese study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that men who have sex once or twice a week reported less ED than men who had sex less frequently, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubc.ca\/images\/c\/c1\/COGS303-erectiledysfunction.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study in 2008 of Finnish men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported similar results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these studies suggest a link, ED resulting from a lack of regular sex is not a foregone conclusion. In fact, researchers of the Finnish study sent the participants a form to fill out through the mail. Since there\u2019s no way of knowing whether they were telling the truth, the researchers have to take patients at their word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex is a sensitive topic, particularly if you view it from a moral perspective, and our responses often depend on who\u2019s asking. A conversation with your doctor is different from one with your closest friend, and we have to take that into account.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Which Came First, the Abstinence or the ED?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED is a complicated topic, and every case of ED is different, with different causes and approaches. For example, ED is often an early sign of heart disease; in fact, one of the first steps you need to take if you\u2019re experiencing ED is to make lifestyle changes that support your heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, somebody with ED could qualify as abstinent, but it may not be the lack of sex that\u2019s causing the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, note that it doesn\u2019t say the men in these studies weren\u2019t having sex. Many were still sexually active, just less frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Are They Abstinent Because of ED, or Something Else?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you define somebody as abstinent if they\u2019re married to a person who can\u2019t have sex and won\u2019t hurt their partner\u2019s feelings? What if a person is asexual, just not interested in sex? What if their marriage was in a complicated place emotionally?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, these studies can\u2019t really take that into account. Sex is as much an emotional act as a physical one, and ED has an emotional component as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line?
