On average, men showed signs of ED more than three years before the onset of symptoms of heart disease.<\/p>\n

Diabetes makes things worse<\/b><\/p>\n

In one of the studies, 2306 men with type 2 diabetes were evaluated, with just over one-quarter of them experiencing ED. None of the men had any signs of heart disease, stroke or vascular disease.<\/p>\n

After four years, the researchers found that the men who had experienced ED at the start of the study were significantly more likely to develop one of the signs of coronary heart disease (CHD). More specifically, while only 9.5 of ever 1,000 men without ED experienced a CHD event each year, 19.7 of 1,000 men\u00a0with<\/i>\u00a0ED experienced a CHD event each year.<\/p>\n

Even with factors like age, the duration of diabetes, high blood pressure and damage to the kidneys or eyes were\u00a0taken into account, ED signaled a 58% increase in the risk of CHD. <\/p>\n

The only stronger warning sign was a spillage of large amounts of protein in the urine\u2014an indication of extensive kidney damage.<\/p>\n

In a second study, men with both type 2 diabetes and silent CHD were split into two groups: those with ED and those without. After four years, the researchers found that the men with ED at the start of the study were twice as likely to suffer a major adverse cardiac event.<\/p>\n

Cutting the risk of heart problems<\/b><\/p>\n

There is good news. One of the studies indicated that men could cut their risk of heart problems by about one-third by taking cholesterol-lowering medications. <\/p>\n

In addition, Viagra (a drug used to treat ED) appeared to offer similar protection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
