{"id":33519,"date":"2022-10-11T12:19:34","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T05:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/?p=33519"},"modified":"2022-10-13T12:27:25","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T05:27:25","slug":"hpv-in-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/std-sexually-transmitted-diseases-treatments\/hpv-in-men\/","title":{"rendered":"HPV In Men: It\u2019s Not Just a Women\u2019s Disease!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Highlights\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human papilloma virus (HPV) in men deserves as much consideration as it does in women.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Although it is not as likely to cause cancer in men as in women, it can still cause cancer of the penis, anus, mouth, and throat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infected men with no symptoms are the top HPV risk for women.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>HPV vaccination is now recommended for both men and women and can provide protection for both.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., human papillomavirus (HPV) affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv-and-men.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the most sexually active age group, 15 to 59. Although HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the country, there\u2019s a popular misconception that it only poses problems for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s true that women are more likely to develop severe complications from the infection, HPV infection in men is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jid\/article\/196\/8\/1128\/813318\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least as common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it is in women, and it can lead to serious health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV in Men<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human papillomaviruses are a family of DNA viruses that infect the inner lining of the organs and external surfaces of the body. These viruses do not discriminate. If you expose yourself to them through sexual contact, they will infect you regardless of gender. And HPV in men can result in cancer, affecting the penis, the anus, the mouth, the throat, or the esophagus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/pubs\/surv-manual\/chpt05-hpv.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of human papillomaviruses had been identified, of which about 40 can cause complications, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aacrjournals.org\/cebp\/article\/17\/7\/1611\/67404\/A-Systematic-Review-of-the-Prevalence-and\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few are dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. HPV infects the genitals, anus, mouth, throat, esophagus, nipples, and under the fingernails, which helps to explain why it\u2019s so easily spread through any type of sexual contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it\u2019s true that women are more at risk of severe complications, such as cervical cancer, men don\u2019t get a free pass regarding HPV infections. Men also represent the main risk of HPV infection for women \u2014 often without realizing they have it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How Do Men Get Infected?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men get infected with HPV the same way women do: through oral, anal, or vaginal sex. When you have sex with someone, you can get HPV even through close skin-to-skin contact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to sleep around to get HPV. You can get infected even if you only have sex with a single person. However, as with any STI, having multiple sexual partners increases your chance of becoming infected with HPV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV Symptoms in Men<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv-and-men.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the majority of HPV-positive men never develop symptoms, and the infection tends to resolve by itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of HPV in men appear on the organs the virus usually affects, like the mouth, throat, penis, anus, or scrotum. These symptoms can include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual growths<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sores<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lumps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warts\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice anything unusual in any of these locations, seek medical help right away. If the symptoms don\u2019t resolve, you may be at risk for penile, anal, or oral cancer. While the risk of developing cancer from HPV is lower for men, it is not zero, particularly for those with weakened immune systems and those who have frequent anal sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV Causes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cause of HPV infection for both men and women is sexual contact. What\u2019s more, in many cases, the virus produces no noticeable symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors can use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3851123\/pdf\/DM23-04-159137.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penile swabs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and brushes to determine whether a tested person is infected. They can sometimes diagnose HPV based on its symptoms, like the warts it causes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time, the CDC doesn\u2019t recommend routine screening for HPV in men. Nor does it recommend testing for diseases that may result from HPV before symptoms appear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV Risk Factors<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers don\u2019t yet understand why HPV causes symptoms and complications in some men but not others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the condition is so widespread that the CDC believes nearly all sexually active people get infected within a few months of becoming active. In the U.S., around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16991079\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.2 million people <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquire the infection every year. It\u2019s difficult to assess how many men may have the disease because so many have no symptoms. However, if you have sex with someone, you expose yourself to infection risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have multiple sexual partners, you\u2019re exposing yourself to more potential sources of infection, so your risk is greater. Those who engage in risky sexual behaviors are also at higher risk of HPV infection.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>HPV and Cancer<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV infections that linger may cause changes in the body that can lead to cancer. Women are more likely to develop cancer from HPV than men because the cervix, vulva, and vagina are biologically more vulnerable to HPV-related cancer than the penis and the anus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men can, however, develop penile cancer, and their risk of anal cancer is the same as women\u2019s. Other cancers that can result from HPV infections are cancers of the mouth, throat, and tonsils.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV-related cancers are rare in men, although those with impaired immune systems are more likely to develop HPV-associated complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV and Genital Warts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer isn\u2019t the only health concern men need to worry about. HPV-infected men can also develop penile and anal warts. The HPV viruses that cause warts tend to be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/hpv.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower-risk ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so men need to be vigilant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HPV Treatment<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no treatment for HPV in men. And the CDC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/rr5511a1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment for those without symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors only treat patients who present with symptoms like genital warts. Their goal is to remove the warts, thereby bringing the infection under control. Some of the efficient wart-removing solutions are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1046\/j.1365-2133.2001.04449.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freezing them off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with liquid nitrogen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting benzoin-based podophyllin resin on them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using salicylic acid or fluorouracil on them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performing surgery\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the exception of surgery, patients can treat themselves at home with prescriptions from their doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warts tend to re-appear after treatment.
