The consensus study looked at the extract to draw conclusions and establish consensus-based statements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemists can extract organic compounds from a water-based mixture using an organic solvent. DHT is one of the main causes of LUTS and BPH. By blocking 5AR, the saw palmetto extract limits the presence of DHT and its effects on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/mens-health\/users-guide-to-the-prostate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lower urinary tract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Problems With Saw Palmetto Extracts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a scientific perspective, lipidosterolic extracts pose many problems. The AUA can\u2019t accept these extracts because it cannot guarantee that they are not toxic. Ethanol-based extracts and supercritical carbon dioxide extracts are available in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other problem with saw palmetto extracts is that they are not standardized. Several companies produce them worldwide, and they all use their own extraction methods. The degree of ripeness of the berries may also differ. The resulting extracts feature different concentrations of the active substance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What the Consensus Study Found<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States Pharmacopeia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defined a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspnf.com\/sites\/default\/files\/usp_pdf\/EN\/USPNF\/revisions\/saw_palmetto.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard for saw palmetto extracts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to that standard, the lipidosterolic extracts must:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contain at least 80% free fatty acids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contain no less than 0.2% sterols<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contain no more than 0.15% alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contain no added substances\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers involved with the new study established several consensus statements based on this standard. Together, these statements redefined the efficacy of saw palmetto for prostate symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The Lipidosterolic Extract of Saw Palmetto Inhibits 5AR and DHT<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extracts do limit DHT in the body and reduce inflammation in the prostate tissue on the cellular level.
