None of this means that if you don\u2019t fall into any of these categories, you\u2019re safe. Health risks are not that straightforward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be at high risk for colon cancer and never get the disease. You may also be theoretically risk-free and develop colon cancer anyway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Colorectal Cancer Risks and Trends<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lifetime risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing colorectal cancer is around 4.3% if you\u2019re a man and 4% for women.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although doctors screen more often for colon cancer, they are discovering fewer and fewer cases. Some risk factors we can control, but by adopting healthier diets and lifestyle choices, we can eliminate some.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other risk factors are environmental, which we may or may not be able to control, or inherited from our parents. There is not much one can do about a genetic predisposition, but early detection can have a positive effect on the outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inherited colorectal cancer cases make up about 5-10% of all colon cancers. When the body can\u2019t fix damaged DNA, cancer occurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to tell apart sporadic and inherited colorectal cancers, but researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/por.hu\/2020\/26\/3\/1435\/1435a.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are working on it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inherited colon cancers can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK538195\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-polyposis or polyposis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> colorectal cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Non-polyposis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inherited colon cancers account for up to 4.2% of all colorectal cancer cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this category, we have:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lynch syndrome.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a genetic condition predisposing sufferers to multiple cancers affecting a wide array of organs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Muir-Torre syndrome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a less-common inherited illness that develops due to defective genes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Turcot syndrome type I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a rare disorder that is associated with multiple colon polyps and a primary brain tumor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Polyposis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inherited colorectal cancers account for up to 5% of all colorectal cancer cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polyposis can take many forms, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juvenile polyposis coli<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peutz-Jeghers syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cowden syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turcot syndrome type II<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardner syndrome<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inherited genetic factors account for a relatively small percentage of all colorectal cancer cases. Hereditary factors may, however, be responsible for more CRC cases. This is why doctors recommend more frequent colon cancer screening for the family members of colorectal cancer sufferers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Other Risk Factors You Can\u2019t Control<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to inheritable genetic factors, we all face risks we can\u2019t control, like age, gender, and race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Age<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent trends notwithstanding, older people are more likely to get colorectal cancer.
