Over the last 15 years, oxaliplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapies have become the gold standard for improving stage III colorectal cancer survival rates after surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irinotecan, anti-VEGF, and anti-EGFR antibodies do not provide better alternatives to oxaliplatin and 5-FU therapies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective adjuvant chemotherapy regimens for stage III colon cancer are six-month courses. Researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/news-events\/cancer-currents-blog\/2017\/adjuvant-chemo-colorectal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been looking for ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce the duration of the treatments to limit the side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing the length of the therapy by three months would make it accessible to more patients. Those unfit for the six-month approach may benefit almost as much from three-month treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Success Rate of Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The adjuvant chemotherapy success rate is the best in stage III patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1990, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJM199002083220602\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that by combining levamisole with 5-FU, they could lower the post-surgery recurrence of colon cancer by 41 percent. At the same time, this adjuvant chemotherapy for colorectal cancer reduced overall death rates by 33 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3073413\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed the efficacy of the approach. Doctors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2738431\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that after five years, colon cancer returned only in 1.5 percent of the patients who had received 5-FU-based adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery. The researchers also noted that cancer was most likely to return within two years of primary surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By adding oxaliplatin to chemo regimens, doctors were able to improve these results. Specifically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/10.1200\/JCO.2008.20.6771\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they improved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 5-year disease-free survival by an additional 5.9 percent and 6-year disease-free survival by 2.5 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All evidence points to the effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer in preventing recurrence of disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Side Effects of Colon Cancer Chemotherapy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the downside, chemotherapy involves the use of toxic chemicals to kill cancer cells.
