In addition to specifying the affected section of the colon, the microscopic description also details the depth to which cancer has penetrated the colon wall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following layers make up the colon wall:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/3.jpeg-7_11zon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32533\" title=\"Colon wall layers graphic\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/3.jpeg-7_11zon.jpg\" alt=\"Colon wall layers graphic\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/3.jpeg-7_11zon.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/3.jpeg-7_11zon-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mucosa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The innermost layer of the intestinal lining, includes the <\/span><b>lamina propria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>muscularis mucosa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Submucosa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The layer immediately under the mucosa, includes the veins, arteries, and lymphatic vessels that feed the colon.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Muscularis:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Includes three layers of muscle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Serosa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The outermost layer of the colon wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of Cancer Cells<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancercenter.com\/cancer-types\/colorectal-cancer\/types#:~:text=The%20most%20common%20type%20of,of%20all%20colorectal%20cancer%20cases.\">Ninety-five percent<\/a> of colon cancer cells are adenocarcinomas. The rest are lymphomas, stromal tumors, or carcinoid tumors.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adenocarcinoid cells have two subtypes: mucinous and signet ring. These cell subtypes may mean a worse outlook than other adenocarcinoma cells. When doctors talk about colorectal cancer, they are almost always talking about adenocarcinoma cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tissue samples are often colon polyps that doctors remove through colonoscopy. This part of the colorectal cancer pathology report may describe the polyps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some polyps look like mushrooms hanging off the inner lining of the colon. These are pedunculated polyps and are easier to remove through colonoscopy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others are flat. These polyps, called sessile polyps, require surgery to remove.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type-wise, polyps can be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK553180\/\"><b>Tubular adenomas<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the most frequent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Villous adenomas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pose the highest cancer risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pseudopolyps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be hyperplastic (overgrown) or inflammatory and are the polyps least likely to turn cancerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tumor (Histologic) Grade<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The histologic grade of the cancer cells tells doctors how deformed they are compared with normal cells. The least differentiated cells are the worst offenders because they spread cancer faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gx: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors can\u2019t identify the grade of the cancer cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>G1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These calls are almost normal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>G2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cells are moderately differentiated, meaning they still resemble normal cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>G3: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cancer cells are poorly differentiated, obviously different from normal cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>G4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are undifferentiated cells; they don\u2019t look anything like normal cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lymphovascular Invasion<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer can spread outside the colon wall and into the surrounding lymph nodes and blood vessels. If doctors notice lymphovascular invasion, cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. If they don\u2019t, it hasn\u2019t spread and remains easier to treat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depth of Cancer Invasion<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting in the inner lining of the colon, colorectal cancer can spread deep into the colon wall, and through it, to the surrounding tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the pathology report, the pathologist clarifies the depth of cancer invasion or the stage of the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stage T1. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer in the mucosal lamina propria that has not spread to the submucosa is superficial, early-stage cancer. The pathology report notes how many of the nodes examined have cancerous cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, 2\/15 means that the pathologist found traces of cancer in two of 15 lymph nodes analyzed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sample Tissue Margins<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors try to make sure that the edges of the tissue they remove through surgery are cancer-free. If the edges are cancer-infected, cancerous cells may have remained in the patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molecular Markers<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molecular markers present in the blood or other bodily fluids allow doctors to tell how likely it is for cancer to recur.
