They are free to change the formulation of their products at any time without changing the label.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific research suggests that some of the supplement\u2019s ingredients may be toxic.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Researchers found that supplement makers had secretly laced some Zyrexin ingredients with sildenafil and tadalafil \u2014 FDA-approved ED medications \u2014 to prove that they work.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Zyrexin is not a safe or effective alternative to FDA-approved ED drugs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrexin is a typical herbal ED supplement, boldly advertised as \u201cthe world\u2019s strongest sexual enhancer.\u201d According to its label, Zyrexin is \u201cthe one that works.\u201d But does it? Let\u2019s explore what Zyrexin is, how well it works in comparison to the FDA-approved medications Viagra and Cialis, and what else you need to know before using it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Is Zyrexin?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrexin is a men\u2019s health supplement that promises to revive your erections. Unlike other herbal ED supplements, Zyrexin claims to increase the blood flow to the penis, mimicking the action of FDA-approved drugs like Viagra and Cialis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All you have to do is swallow two pills, and within an hour, you will have the ability to achieve a strong erection with effects that last for 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that while some ingredients in Zyrexin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefit erectile health in small ways, there is no good scientific evidence that proves the supplement works as advertised. Worse, some ingredients may be toxic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is a Proprietary Blend?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proprietary blends have a notoriously shady reputation in the supplement industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate supplements as they do prescription medications. They do, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/small-entity-compliance-guide-statement-identity-nutrition-labeling-and-ingredient-labeling-dietary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dietary supplement makers to list the ingredients they use in their products by weight and quantity \u2014 unless they call their products \u201cproprietary blends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a supplement maker calls its product a proprietary blend, it does not have to list the quantities of the individual ingredients; that information is considered a trade secret. This secretiveness makes it almost impossible to assess the effectiveness of an ingredient or the consistency of a product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if a product proves beneficial initially, supplement makers can reduce the quantity of an effective but expensive ingredient at any time without having to change their labeling. (Maybe)<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, the ingredients in your bottle of Zyrexin may depend on where you bought it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you purchased the product from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walgreens.com\/store\/c\/zyrexin-sexual-enhancer-dietary-supplement-tablets\/ID=prod6161955-product\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walgreens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the formula may contain 40 milligrams of niacin, shown as the first ingredient on the label. However, niacin isn\u2019t on the ingredients list of any other labels we investigated, including Zyrexin sold by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/Zyrexin-World-s-Strongest-Sexual-Enhancer-Tablets-525-mg-10-count\/10317356\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvs.com\/shop\/ingredients\/zyrexin-world-s-strongest-sexual-enhancer-tablets-prodid-461055\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CVS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riteaid.com\/shop\/zyrexin-sexual-enhancer-world-s-strongest-tablets-10-tablets-0352246\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rite Aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We tried to visit Superbalife\u2019s website to clear up the mystery, but it turns out they don\u2019t have one. One search led us to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zyrexin.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.zyrexin.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but this brought us to a single page with an image of the product and the names of three retailers who sell it: Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid. That\u2019s it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no ingredients list and no links to more information of any kind about this product. We were surprised by this. If this product is \u201cThe One That Works\u201d as they claim, wouldn\u2019t they want to prove that claim with testimonials from lots of satisfied customers on their product sales page?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We found it odd that not only are there no testimonials posted for this product, there isn\u2019t even a website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But back to the niacin. While we can\u2019t explain why niacin shows up only in the Walgreens formula, we can guess why niacin might be included in an ED supplement. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21810191\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that niacin can improve erectile dysfunction, but the trial only studied men who had elevated cholesterol levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More telling still, note that the doses found effective in the study \u2014 500-1500 milligrams \u2014 are far greater than the 40 milligrams listed for the Walgreens formulation of Zyrexin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proprietary Ingredients<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the FDA doesn\u2019t require supplement makers to divulge the quantities of proprietary blend ingredients, they do have to list those ingredients in order from the highest quantity to the lowest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the breakdown of Zyrexin\u2019s proprietary ingredients, in the order they appear on the label:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Epimedium Leaf Extract<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as horny goat weed, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epimedium sagittatum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains a substance known as icariin, which may inhibit PDE5 in the same way that Viagra does. However, the research is conflicting on how well it works for ED.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The studies supporting the effectiveness of epimedium for ED are either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3551978\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or human studies focusing on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3746578\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbal compound combinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We don\u2019t know whether horny goat weed improves ED in men under normal conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because epimedium is listed first, it\u2019s likely the main ingredient in Zyrexin (excluding the niacin in the product sold by Walgreens), but again, there\u2019s no way to know that for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Yohimbe Extract<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yohimbine is another herbal compound that may impact ED. Various studies looked at doses from a few hundred milligrams per day to 6,000 milligrams. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/turkishjournalofurology.com\/en\/yohimbine-as-a-treatment-for-erectile-dysfunction-a-systematic-review-and-meta-analysis-1610877\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They concluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that yohimbine alone does not improve sexual function, but it may improve the effects of other ED drugs and herbal compounds. However, yohimbe taken orally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science\/yohimbine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Xanthoparmelia Scabrosa Extract<\/h5>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanthoparmelia scabrosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also called \u201csexy footpath lichen\u201d because it grows on asphalt in New Zealand. Xanghoparmelia is said to be an aphrodisiac, and like horny goat weed, it may contain compounds that inhibit PDE5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, those compounds, called scabrosin esters, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0041008X03001893\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; they\u2019ve been found to cause cell death in humans. The herb may also contain high levels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.er.usgs.gov\/publication\/70026271\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy metals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Men in New Zealand have been warned by several sources not to use xanthoparmelia to treat their ED.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Ginkgo Extract<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginkgo biloba extract is known as a substance that increases blood circulation to the brain and can help improve memory. The same mechanism may improve erections and sexual function in rats. However, an exhaustive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8264219\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that it had a limited impact on human sexual function and required further research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Cnidium Extract<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A traditional Chinese herbal supplement, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cnidium monnieri<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10799242\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a smooth muscle relaxant and PDE5 inhibitor in rabbits. But we know little about how it works, whether it works for humans, and whether it\u2019s safe to take. Since cnidium may slow blood clotting, taking it could be dangerous for some.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Velvet Bean Extract<\/h5>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucuna pruriens <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20456630\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may improve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexual function in diabetic rats, but it\u2019s unclear if it can produce similar effects in humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The velvet bean quantity in Zyrexin is likely small, given that it\u2019s close to the bottom end of the ingredient list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Butea Superba Extract<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science concerning the effects of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butea superba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on erectile function is questionable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2010 study initially found the compound to be as effective as sildenafil citrate (Viagra). However, testing of a second batch showed no effect at all on ED. Researchers later discovered that the manufacturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bjui-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1464-410X.2009.08748.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had laced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first batch of the experimental drug with a PDE5 inhibitor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16006928\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a common practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ED supplements. Pure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butea superba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extract had proved ineffective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse, high doses of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butea superba<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18554827\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and may actually reduce testosterone levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32490\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3.jpeg-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32490\" title=\"An unhappy man\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3.jpeg-4.jpg\" alt=\"An unhappy man\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3.jpeg-4.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3.jpeg-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3.jpeg-4-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Can ED supplements make you sick?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5>L-arginine<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-arginine is an amino acid the body needs to produce nitric oxide, which widens and relaxes blood vessels, allowing for the blood flow necessary for healthy erections. L-arginine has long been known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/current-health-news\/should-men-with-ed-take-l-arginine-supplements\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to help with this process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the recommended dose of l\u2019arginine for ED is from 1500-5000 mg. Zyrexin contains far less than that; the total of all of Zyrexin\u2019s ingredients is only 1050 milligrams per \u201cserving,\u201d or 2-pill recommended dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Zyrexin Reviews<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Zyrexin reviews available online are a weird mix. On most sites, they appear to be widely split between 1 star and 5 stars with relatively few in between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User reviews at Walgreens and Walmart paint a clearer picture of users\u2019 experience with the product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Walmart site, the product\u2019s overall rating is 2.4 stars out of 5, with 77 out of 130 reviews giving it only 1 star.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The product fares a little better at Walgreens, with an overall rating of 3.1 stars. Most reviews were split pretty evenly between 5 stars and 1 star.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those who rated this product poorly at both sites, here are some common complaints:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some users report that Zyrexin is ineffective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minority says that Zyrexin made them sick.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some reviewers liken it to a placebo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some reviewers think that it works, even though it makes them sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Zyrexin versus Viagra and Cialis<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrexin\u2019s track record is no match for FDA-approved and scientifically supported ED drugs like Viagra and Cialis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As discussed above, researchers have found that unethical supplement makers have laced at least two (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butea superba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanthoparmelia scabrous)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Zyrexin ingredients with sildenafil and tadalafil at some point to enhance their performance.
